Maria's Journal
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:00:02 AM »
I'm reading the Paleo for Athletes book.  Constructive criticism and advice are quite welcome as part of the learning process.  But step away from my half & half for my coffee!

I'm not into measuring and counting anymore, so this is just a list.

9/2/2009
2 coffee w/ half & half and stevia
3 eggs scrambled with a handful of fresh spinach in olive oil
tea w/ stevia
granny smith apple
walnuts (way too many)
romaine salad
tuna salad (tuna, celery, onion, mustard, mayo, pepper)
tea w/ stevia
marinated broccoli (olive oil, lemon juice & garlic) - from Paleo book
cold chicken leg quarter dipped in mustard
yet more tea w/ stevia
egg & lemon soup (2 eggs, can of chicken broth, lemon juice) - Avgolemono

I think you will find that non-Paleo food(?) items will inhibit your training performance. I didn't feel the intensely ergogenic potential of this way of eating until I was on my 3rd. week of 100% Paleo. I have found that going deeper Paleo than Cordain recommends(no refined oils, no potatoes, etc..) is better for me. I'm only 5 generations from my hunter/gatherer ancestors.

Something else I have noticed (that Tarlach and I discussed) is that those folks who are unwilling to give up certain "dietary pleasures" have a very low success rate. They make excuses and concessions for certain food choices then they spiral down off the Paleo "wagon". Sure to follow this is a post about how terrible that food choice was, how poorly they felt, how sick it made them and how hard it was to return to Paleo eating afterwards.

6 months ago I said "I'll give up smoking before I give up coffee."

3 months ago I quit smoking.

I'm drinking my coffee right now.

I switched from a non-dairy creamer to straight milk. I drink 1 or 2 cups per day, medium light, with stevia. Haven't noticed a detriment so far, been losing weight, gaining strength, and the symptoms of my smokers-asthma are vanishing.

My daily non paleo cheat is coffee.  I just like coffee. No excuses except I want my coffee.  :)

Me too. I love my morning coffee. I've already given up grains, dairy, beans and most sugar. Please let me have my coffee. I'm not training for anything, except how to train my dog!

Coffee is a seed, not a bean, I keep reminding myself.

Pre-paleo - I used to drink my coffee about half milk and half sugar  :o

I now prefer coffee black with no sweetener.

It's pretty easy to get into drinking it plain and if I can do it anyone can.  Don't use drinking coffee as an excuse to consume other trash.

Wldg - I understand the half & half.  I'll ponder that one...

As far as mayo, I can understand concern with store bought because of soybean oil and usually some sugar (Duke's full fat has no sugar).

BUT, can I have mayo if I make my own?  I tried olive oil and did not care for the strong flavor.  Canola oil has a nice flavor, but we've already ditched that.

SO.... I have also used grapeseed oil for mayo which was good.  And I read about using flaxseed oil for mayo which I wanted to try.  I only use eggs, oil, lemon juice, pinch garlic powder and pinch of sea salt (Ooops, I guess no salt from now on? or is sea salt ok?).

Did the chicken broth get picked only because it's in a can and not homemade?  I can understand that.  Now that I look at it:   :o

chicken stock
salt
natural flavor
dextrose
chicken broth powder
autolyzed yeast
potassium chloride
disidium inosinate
disodium guanylate
chicken fat
vinegar powder
citric acid
succinic acid
lactic acid

Hmmm... ok, nuff said bout that.  Rats, I threw away a chicken carcass just yesterday because I was too lazy to do anything with it.

Tarlach - I will try black coffee w/ just stevia.  But not today... or tomorrow either.  I will um..... how about I not buy more half & half when mine is gone?  It's actually almost gone anyway.  :(

OH, one more thing.  How about the Davinci or Torani sugar free coffee syrups?  I like hazelnut.

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
9/3/09
2 coffee w/ half & half and stevia (still pondering this one)
chicken breast sauteed in olive oil w/ creole seasoning
2 eggs over medium atop the chicken, Mmmmmmm...
tea w/ stevia
granny smith apple w/
almond butter (way too much, but not as much as if it had been peanut butter)
romaine salad w/ red wine vinegar & olive oil (vinegar, I know.  Just using it up, then switch to lemon juice)
tuna salad (tuna, celery, onion, mayo, mustard, pepper), yes mayo was store bought, but I don't mind making my own.
tea w/ stevia
walnuts
egg & lemon soup (yes this had the canned chicken broth, lesson learned)
marinated broccoli
So, lessons learned: make my own mayo and chicken broth. Use lemon juice on salad rather than vinegar.
... and hold on to what's left of the half & half for dear life before someone snatches it from me.  ;D
Maria, I have been using avocado instead of mayo for a loooong time. It's much better and still gives the creaminess you are looking for. As we all know avocado is the mono-unsaturated fat bomb!  ;D
One of our favorite post ski treats here is hare/grouse guacamole.
grill and chop the meat up fine
mash/whip avocado
blend
add- cilantro, black pepper, cumin, cayenne pepper to taste
Pre-Paleo we had this with corn tortilla chips. This season I think we will use apple slices  ;)
Coffee- I have always drank coffee black and strong! Dark roasts tend to be smoother and less acidic than med. or light roasts. As you have read, Friel and Cordain believe that black coffee is one of the truly effective training aids. It is proven to be a lipo-tropic and enhance muscle contraction.
I have made homemade guacamole and used it on salads.  But I like to make tuna salad and egg salad to bring to work.  Those are the only two things I use mayo for.  I wonder how those would be with guacamole instead of mayo.  With your recipe I could substitute the tuna or eggs.  I like the idea with apples too.  I always have walnuts or almond butter with my apple; never thought about guacamole dip.
But guacamole is something I could have a portion control issue with, along with almond butter and nuts.... nom, nom, nom...  :-\
You can make mayo from coconut oil and egg yolks. I use avocado instead of mayo, too.
I've never trained for a triathlon. I have trained triathletes. I wouldn't worry all that much about portion control with avocado-17gr. of carbs and 29gr. of mono-unsat. fat
Never had avocado and tuna but I'm sure it would be good. Eggs and avocado has been a breakfast staple for me for years. I have that almost everyday.
I've never used stevia, but I think in a previous discussion people here concluded it wasn't really paleo.  A tiny bit of honey would be a more paleo sweetener for the tea, but there are also types of tea that go better without sweetener.  I'm partial to Oolong, myself.
You might try switching the coffee out for tea for a weekend.  You'll be sleepy at first, but I bet you'll be as good without the coffee by the end of the weekend as you were with it before.  It's not a big paleo issue, though.
Hey, no fair having interesting secret discussions!
I've noticed that people who admit that their cheats are cheats are less likely to fall off the wagon than people who try to pretend "this is actually paleo"....
No it's more like the "this isn't paleo but it's fine and I'm going to have it" types. Or the Paleo percentage folks. You know the "granola bar and apple" since the apple is acceptable the granola bar can be overlooked.
Warren, Warren, Waren - Wow ya'll are ruthless.  I was all excited this morning because I just sat down with my coffee and it has NO half & half in it.  I was so proud so myself for not using the one thing I said I would not give up.  Then I sit down here to share my accomplishment and now this.... now you want to take away my stevia too!!!!  :'(  And stevia is all natural.  BUT... I will work on it.  I would like to get away from sweeteners all together.  And actually, the tea is pretty good without the sweetener, so that shouldn't be too difficult.
Wlfdg - I was excited to tell you I used NO half & half today, but Warren ruined it by saying I should not have used the stevia either. (Warren - I'm kidding and I truly do appreciate your opinion and comments!)
9/4/09
2 coffee w/ half & half and stevia (this was yesterday, so I still had half & half)
3 eggs scrambled w/ green peppers and onions in olive oil
granny smith apple
1/3 jar of almond butter
tea w/ stevia
marinated broccoli
3 hard boiled eggs w/ mayo (store bought; I'll make homemade or use avocados in the future)
celery sticks
green pepper
1/3 jar of almond butter (scraping the sides of the jar for every last bit)
salad w/ ACV & olive oil (vinegar again, at least it was raw organic)
peach
Well, that does it.  No more jars of peanut butter and/or almond butter are allowed in the same room with me.  Ever.  Unfortunately, I still have another jar of this stuff.  I didn’t even want dinner last night I was so full of almond butter.  I only ate the salad because my son came home for the weekend and I wanted to have dinner with him and catch up on things.
I guess I need to stick with whole walnuts, but I don’t do real well with walnuts either. I’ve got to get this under control.  I need to portion out the whole bag into smaller baggies and somehow manage not to eat up every portion in one sitting.  I like to have a handful of Walnuts with my fruit at 10 am.  I’d love to make homemade walnut butter, but I’m afraid I’d eat that all up too.
Wlfdg – When I said I may have a portion control issue with guacamole, what I really meant was binge issue.  I think I just need to plan better and make sure I’m getting enough other calories to feel satiated and not be tempted to binge on high fat/calorie foods. At 5'4" and 112 lbs, I can't get away with massive calories.
