Warren, Warren, Waren - Wow ya'll are ruthless.  I was all excited this morning because I just sat down with my coffee and it has NO half & half in it.  I was so proud so myself for not using the one thing I said I would not give up.

I'm sorry - I didn't mean to come across so harshly.  I have to say I'm very impressed that you gave up your half & half already - with most people they talk about it for weeks or months before they make those little changes, if they ever do.  I'm still working on chocolate more than a year after starting paleo, though I've got it down to a small amount now.

No it's more like the "this isn't paleo but it's fine and I'm going to have it" types. Or the Paleo percentage folks. You know the "granola bar and apple" since the apple is acceptable the granola bar can be overlooked.

Ah, I see.  I guess for people who ignore significant calories from the big three - grains, legumes, and dairy - I don't really consider them paleo in the first place.

Well done Maria!

How was the black coffee?

Just try it with less and less stevia over time.  It won't take you long to be loving it black and plain.  Then you will wonder how you drank it with anything in it  ;D

The only problem with plain black coffee is that you can then actually taste the coffee!  I ended up spending much more on good quality coffee  ;)

• Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . . • Legumes (soy/beans/peas)
• Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc)

Warren - I was totally kidding, and truly did not take it harshly.  I actually thought it was kind of funny.  I'm completely open-minded to what others have to say and love learning new things.  Thank you!

Tarlach - Thanks! It wasn't bad... I really tried not to give it much thought.  I just drank it.  I might try the dark roast next time.

Maria, I'm stoked for you!  ;D

Stevia isn't really natural. It is still processed from a plant not the plant itself.
Buy walnuts in their shells. That will slow you down.

I think you will discover that portion control isn't really all that necessary with unrefined fats. High glycemic load fruit and certainly dried fruits, yes. I had issues with binging on grapes, cherries, berries and even oranges on lactate threshhold days. When I tried to ignore it I would wake out of a sound sleep and eat like 2lbs. of grapes! It never seemed to affect fat loss though.

9/5/09

2 coffee w/ stevia (no half & half!  I had run out anyway)
5 strips bacon
3 eggs over medium cooked in the bacon grease
peach
tuna salad (I'm out of store bought mayo now)
2 oz walnuts (yes, I measured this time and did not eat half the bag)
massive serving of a fatty pork roast, nom, nom, nom.... (the fat was good and crunchy too!)
Greek meatballs (ground beef, onions, celery, can of tomatoes, garlic, eggs, lemon juice, mint leaves & other spices)
salad w/ ACV & olive oil

OK, let's see here.  I guess the worst thing I had was bacon, but it needed used up and my son is home.  I'm not too concerned about the stevia or the ACV at this point.

Since my son is home, I ate heavier and later than normal, ughhh...

Bacon is not that bad.  Just hunt for one without sugar (or nitrates if possible).  We also buy ours with the lowest salt content that we can find.

It has no sugar, but I have yet to find one without nitrates.  I'll keep looking.

The coffee with no cream turned out not to be a big deal; I guess it was more of a mental block.

It is called uncured bacon. You can find it sometimes at Trader Joe's or local health food stores. Sometimes it is frozen.

Paleo Dude - The nearest Trader Joe's is about 1 1/2 hours from me up in Raleigh.  BUT, my son lives up there now so I'm making trips more often and can hit up the Trader Joe's while there!  But I don't really care much about bacon and rather have a salmon fillet or chicken with my morning eggs.

9/6/09
1 coffee w/ stevia
protein powder drink (Jay Robb’s 1 carb)
granny smith apple
1 Nuun tablet dissolved in water (electrolyte replacement, no sugar)
1 Gu chomp (Energy chew thingy eaten midway bike ride)

30.75 mile bike ride followed by a 3 mile run (3 hours total)

Restaurant - Breakfast Anytime
3 coffee w/ half & half and splenda (yikes!)
Philly omlette (3 eggs, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese)
Texas Pete
1 tomato slice

Planned for later…

2 Michelob Ultras
T-bone steak
Asparagus
Salad w/ lemon juice and olive oil

OK, I caved at the restaurant after our workout and sure did put half & half and splenda in my coffee.  I should have asked for no cheese on my omlette.  I have no excuse for the Texas Pete.

This is where Wlfdg’s athletic expertise is needed!  I’ve been having a piece of fruit and Jay Robb’s protein powder drink (1 carb) on the mornings of long workout day.  And hydrating with a Nuun tablet dissolved in water.  But last time I totally bonked on the brick run off the bike.  It was the worst I’ve EVER felt on a run and I nearly didn’t complete it.  I wondered if it had to do with glucose depletion, so I tried a Gu drop this time during the ride and ran much better.

Last time 3 miles: 30:00; 10:00 min miles
This time 3 miles: 26:30; 8:50 min miles

I’m just not sure how I feel about Gu drops, but I sure felt better this time over last time.  I’m still trying to work out nutritional needs, but it’s hard because I’d rather avoid sugar but need something to provide quick energy during workouts that are now growing over 3 hours.  Whatcha think? Am I allowede Gu under these conditions?

As for the Michelob Ultras, I typically have them just the one time a week; and sometimes and occasional glass of wine and sometimes a shot of brandy in my tea at night.

Do ya’ll ever drink anything?  I guess cavemen did not lay around the cave chugging beer or toasting wine glasses.

I need a caveman name so I can think more like a caveman…

In Paleo for Athletes choice of and timing of nutrients based duration of event is covered.
Here is my regiment-
Getting up and directly on bike; 1 liter water, 1 whole egg, 1/4 piece cantaloupe, 12ozs. VERY STRONG black coffee

If I have time (90min-2hrs) before ride I eat a whole meal w/ high glycemic index fruit. ex.- 6 whole eggs fried, 1 avocado, 1/2 cantaloupe. About 30min. before ride I will drink coffee.

I live in a high alpine desert so I drink water constantly through the day.

I eat nothing on rides less than 2hrs long.
2-3hrs.- 1 banana @ 90min.
3-4hrs.- 1 banana @ 60min./ sip on 50/50 apple juice concentrate for duration + water from my camelback or water bottle.
Apple juice concentrate is natures Gatorade.

Supplements are convenient but real food can give you what you need and more! It's all about choices and timing.

Alcohol- I don't drink. Bad genetics! My mother has just enough Irish in her to get our Native American in trouble  ;).

Thanks Wlfdg!  I normally workout between 4:30 and 6:30 am, so a full breakfast is not really an option.  Actually, during the week I do not bother to eat at all before exercise, just a few sips of coffee and some water.  But during the week I usually do about an hour in the morning and another hour in the evening. Sunday is the only day I have a long 3+ hr block.  I think I'd be good with a banana during training.  And I've not gone over 2 hours for races.... yet.  planning first olympic length Triathlon next year as well as a full marathon.

My Paleo for Athletes book does encourage sports drinks and gels though; that's why I thought I'd give it a try.

Maria, What kind of time do you think you can finish a Olympic distance race in? 4hrs.? less? more? It's 1500m swim/40km bike/10km run?
What is your strongest leg? Weakest?

What time are you getting up before you a.m. training?
I used to train on an empty stomach in the a.m. Most of the research I have been reading in the last year or so really stress the importance of topping off the amino acid pool and muscle glycogen stores before a.m. training. Friel/Cordain stress this in the book.

I haven't noticed a significant difference in energy in the 3mi. mtn.bike sprints I do with my dogs which are basically HIIT sessions. I really notice it when weight training! My last exercise suffers. I haven't gone without food prior to any long rides.
