Hi Maria,

Are you running in the cold weather? Last night, I bought Under Armour Cold Gear (long sleeve shirt 1/4 zipper and leggings) for $112. I hope they keep me warm and allow me to enjoy my runs during the winter. I tried running in the evenings after work at around 5:30pm, but it's dark and at the EOD, I just don't feel like doing anything. I can't stand a treadmill/hamster wheel. I am going out for a 46 degree run in a few minutes. I am doing a 5 mile off road race on an island in January.

Reviving my old journal and re-committing to Paleo.

Although I've remained relatively low carb, I've been off track a bit. I really want to work on whole foods, grass fed meats, and locally grown organic produce this year.  And I need to work on getting sweeteners out of my life.

I've raced several times over the past year, both running and triathlon.  Most recently, I completed Ironman Florida on November 5!

Swim (2.4 miles) = 1:29:16
Transition from swim to bike = 11:11
Bike 112 miles = 6:32:20
Transition from bike to run = 4:03
Run 26.2 miles = 4:50:25
Total = 13:04:13   LONG HARD day!  Whew!

My weight has been fairly stable, but is slightly elevated due to the enormous amount of calories I eat.  Since the race, I need to adjust my eating to the lesser training schedule.  I will mainly being running throughout the winter with very little swimming and biking.

For now I need to get re-focused and re-balanced and prepare for new goals.

Hi Maria,

How low in carbs do you go with all the biking, running and swimming you do?

Hi Maria,

How low in carbs do you go with all the biking, running and swimming you do?

I don't count carbs, but generally stick with low carb foods... meat, eggs, and veggies w/ some fruit/nuts.... Greek yogurt and some cheese (which I plan to cut back out).

I've indulged in whole wheat toast on occasion.  Actually, I've had plenty of other cheats along the way, which is why I commented that I'm off track and need to get re-balanced.

I admit I succumb to a sports drink during the really long training sessions.  I have a customized formula from Infinit Nutrition that is 196 calories, 46 carbs, 3 protein (no fat).  I really only use it when I'm getting into 2+ hour runs or 3+ hour bikes.  I also use Larabars during training sometimes.

I've had a VERY hard time balancing a way of eating with endurance sports. I need to start food logging again.  It is the only thing that works for me.

Work in progress...

I'm a work in progress so I'm just going to write the good, the bad, and the ugly; and how it makes me feel.  This will help me make improvements in the future.  I still have a few habits leftover from Atkins. Atkins REALLY helped me lose weight back in 2008, but it is heavy on processed low carb foods which is why I want to move away from it.

coffee
fat free half & half
davinci sweetener
3 eggs
onion
spinach
olive oil
salmon fillet
salad w/ red wine vinegar
almonds
tea w/ stevia

Restaurant
Greek salad (included feta)
grilled salmon
michelob ultra

I gave in to peer pressure on a group appetizer with a few onion rings that were breaded.  This made me feel bad about myself afterward.  I know I still allow a few things in my diet that I shouldn't, i.e. half and half, sweetener, beer, occasional cheese.  But there is no excuse for something breaded.

coffee
fat free half and half
davinci sweetener (won't be buying anymore of this)
3 eggs
onion
spinach
olive oil
almonds
tea w/ stevia
cobb salad w/ red wine vinegar
chuck steak w/ horseradish
lettuce salad w/ red wine vinegar

100% unsweetened cranberry juice diluted with water, stevia and vodka.  Had a rough week and was ready for a holiday drink!  This is abnormal for me but will likely indulge a bit over the holidays.

Working on tomorrow's recipes:

Turkey
Gravy
Greek meatballs
Sweet potato stuffing
Green Bean casserole
Cranberry Sauce (homemade)
Pumpkin pie w/ homemade whipped cream
Stuffed eggs
meat/cheese/olives/veggie tray

I won't eat these:
Garlic mashed potatoes
Watergate Salad
Wheat rolls

121.4 lbs - This is high for me and needs to be addressed.  Should be at least <118, but ideally 114.

coffee
organic half & half
stevia
1 stuffed egg while getting dressed
3 scrambled eggs/bacon grease once at office
4 oz salmon/olive oil
salad w/ red vinegar & black olives
turkey chili (Paleo recipe, YUM!)
another stuffed egg
several cups of tea with stevia
1/2 jar of huge garlic stuffed olives (binge item, need to stay away)
egg & lemon soup (2 eggs, chicken broth, lemon juice/threw in some chilies that were left from recipe)
broccoli
handful of blueberries
coconut oil off the spoon

That makes 7 eggs today.  Hmmm...

I did drink water with artificially flavored orange sticks in it, but then I took the rest of the orange sticks out of my office and got rid of those pesky things.  Will not buy them again.

I had the urge to binge last night but refrained.  Wanted something cold and fruity and would have made a HUGE blender of protein powder & blueberries.  I think I still have a diet ginger ale in there, which I would have used in the smoothie.  But anyway, I didn't do it.

I still have maybe 2 diet sodas and bunch of sugar free torani coffee syrup.

I was looking at a post that had comments about the coconut oil detox in it.  I'm having a real problem with sweeteners and wondered if a good cleansing would do the trick.  I feel really overpowered by these cravings.  But I think a CO detox would make me too ill to function.  I wonder if a meat and egg fast would work to some extent.

And I am sitting here with half & half, stevia, and torani syrup in my coffee right now (sigh).  I should just dump that syrup out.

Okay.  I did it.  I dumped out the Torani syrup.  I felt like an alcoholic dumping out booze.
