My Own Paleo Journey
« on: January 11, 2012, 06:57:28 PM »
Three years ago I weighed in at 180lb and am only 5'6. I wanted to make some serious lifestyle changes, so I began counting calories and exercising daily. I got down to 160lb and found myself at a plateau. My close friend was a huge advocate of the Paleo diet, but I laughed it off because it sounded absurd. He provided me with stacks of literature including blogs, medical journals and other various publications, so I realized it may not be as crazy as it sounded. I told myself, "what the hell," and decided to give it a try. I stuck with the diet for about a year and got down to 139lb. In addition to working out, the diet allowed me to achieve my goals, while eating loads of meat and cheese (everything you're told is bad for you as a kid). The hardest part for me was my passion for a beverage enjoyed by mankind for centuries...BEER. I caved in to temptation and quit the diet.

I currently am weighing in at approximately 150lb. After witnessing my good friend and fellow poster Zensenji lose an enormous amount of weight and get in the best shape of his life, I have decided to give the Paleo diet another shot. He described how blogging his progress provided him with motivation and inspiration, so his enthusiasm toward the Paleo Lifestyle is why I am here. I will be recording my progress and sharing new recipes and workouts. If anyone has any suggestions or words of wisdom please share. I am looking forward to sharing my experience and achieving my goals, so here we go...

I started back on Paleo Monday and I am already down about 5lbs. I worked out for the first time this week yesterday and have been feeling great. My schedule is packed during the week, so my goal is to pre-cook as much as possible and package it up for breakfast and lunch during the week. I address dinner individually to avoid becoming too bored with the routine. I am constantly running to and from Georgia State University and my law firm down the street, so during the week I need to be able to grab something and go. The first week has been very easy for me, but my biggest challenge yet will be the upcoming weekend. Avoiding beer will be hard, avoiding my favorite drunk foods after returning from the bars will be even harder (pizza, chinese food, waffle house). Wish me luck!

Here are my meals from yesterday and today:

Thursday
Breakfast
- (2) hard boiled eggs
- (1) pork sausage link
- (1 oz) cheddar cheese
- (8 oz) coffee - black

Workout
- (2) miles - running
- (1000m) rowing
- (2) miles - stationary cycling
- Ab Workout

Lunch
- (8 oz) slow roasted pork sirloin
- (2) large spanish olives
- (1 oz) Muenster Cheese

Dinner
- Stuffed Portabella Mushroom; Stuffed with mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and on top of a salad with balsamic vinegarette
- 5 chicken wings (no breading) with a jerk seasoning

Friday
Breakfast
- (2) Hard boiled eggs
- (1) pork sausage link
- (1 oz) cheddar cheese
- (8 oz) coffee - black

Workout
- (2) miles - running
- (1000m) rowing
- (2) miles - stationary cycling
- Ab Workout
- Arms/Chest

Lunch
- (8 oz) slow roasted pork sirloin
- (2) large spanish olives
- (1 oz) Muenster Cheese

Haven't decided dinner yet, but it will definitely be something simple and easy. I will probably be going to the bars in Buckhead tonight, so I will count on downing at least 4 bourbon and diet cokes.

So, I finished my first weekend back on the Paleo diet. It was definitely a challenge, but I managed to do it. Dinner on Friday was phenomenal. I went to dinner at Nori Nori with my parents and younger brother. I had a ton of crab legs, shrimp and raw oysters, as well as plenty of interesting Japanese salads. On Saturday, I had lunch at Willy's and ordered a Salad with grilled steak. I ordered nearly all of the paleo-friendly toppings and crushed it. Then for dinner I grilled out with a bunch of friends. I prepared a delicious 1.75lb steak and made 4 jalapeno peppers wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheddar cheese. I went out to bars both Friday and Saturday and drank only bourbon & diet cokes. I did not have a chance to work out over the weekend because of a busy schedule, but I kept the diet completely Paleo, which is a victory! Today marks the beginning of week 2!

For Breakfast I made a two egg omelet with muenster cheese and sausage. For lunch I had an Italian pork sausage with mustard and one ounce of muenster cheese. I will not have time to workout this afternoon because I am busy at the office, but I plan on lifting and running when I get back to my apartment. Dinner will be buttered vegetables and about 6 oz of slow roasted pork sirloin.

Congratulations LitigationSensation!

The first week is certainly the most difficult period of time, but I see that you made it through with a breeze. You made sure that you had a substantial variety in your first week's meals and stuck with your plan, and I'm sure you are starting to feel healthier again. As I know, you have quite a busy schedule, but it seems as though you are starting to get into a groove with planning meals around your schedule.

Keep up the good work, and keep everyone posted on your questions and ideas,

                                                     -Zensenji

Today I made an excellent discovery. I went out to dinner with my girlfriend to Chow Baby and had a paleo feast. I had been there once before, but it was during my hiatus from the diet. Chow Baby is a stir-fry restaurant where you grab one black bowl for rice, pasta, veggies and a great variety of other ingredients, as well as a red bowl for meats. Today's meat selection included squid, tilapia pork, sausage, beef and chicken. I had never thought to come to this restaurant since the main selling point is noodles, but there is a hugely diverse selection of vegetables and sauces, some sugary, but also some zero carb. For my first bowl I had a plentiful helping of: spinach, sprouts, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, bok choy, green onions, broccoli, with 2 eggs, garlic cilantro, and red Thai chili sauce. For my meat I packed my bowl with a giant helping of squid, tilapia, and pork. My second bowl consisted of the same vegetables, but with 1 egg and beef. I enjoyed the variety so much that I ordered a bowl to go!

Aside from my find, today was very busy. I have been noticeably feeling healthier and having more energy. For breakfast I had 2 hard boiled eggs and a pork sausage link. I worked on several projects at my law firm all morning and then ran over to Georgia State for class. After class I had lunch, which was 1 broiled lamb chop with olive oil and rosemary and a salad (with romaine lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, and two olives. After working the rest of the day, I went back to Georgia State and played racquetball for 1.5 hours with a friend. Prior to beginning Paleo, I was having trouble falling asleep every night, trouble waking up and I would find myself getting tired sporadically throughout the day. Now I easily fall asleep, wake up recharged and energized, and blast through my day full force. However, I don't fully attribute the change to my new diet habits. I believe the combination of the diet and increased physical activity is the true key to my change in feeling. At the beginning of last week I weighed in at 153 and I am already down to 147.5 and feeling huge improvements in my health! I think all of these positive developments will make staying on the paelo this upcoming weekend that much easier.

I made it through my second weekend of paelo! In the past two weeks, I have strictly adhered to the diet (aside from one small break) and have been leaning down incredibly quickly. I have not had any beer, bread, or sugars aside from a little barbecue sauce last night. I slow cooked about 6 pounds of pork sirloin in a crock pot, with half a pound of bacon and 5 tablespoons of butter. The meat was so tender once it was finished that I stroked it with a fork and the entire chunk of meat fell apart in the most delicious pulled pork. I was left no choice than to slather the pork in the most delicious Jack Daniels BBQ sauce. My philosophy on any diet, whether paleo or other, is that you must reward yourself occasionally. My two week reward was a delicious BBQ feast.

Today, I slept in late and had a giant bowl of homemade soup and some chicken for breakfast/lunch. I broiled some thinly sliced chicken breast covered in Frank's Red Hot and a spicy garlic wing sauce from Kroger that is zero carb. The soup was a take on Italian Wedding Soup -- with spinach, ground sausage, some grated Italian cheeses and a whole mess load of spices. Before I prepared all of this I loaded up the crock pot with another massive chunk of pork sirloin. I set it on low, so by the time I get back home this evening it should be ready to eat with a spoon.

My goal of this upcoming week is to increase the intensity of my workouts. I want to increase the speed/distance of my cardio and increase the weight of my lifting. I want to be very close to my final goal by February 24, when I will be road tripping to New Orleans with my girlfriend for a 4 day Mardi Gras/Romantic getaway experience. I will not be monitoring my food and beverage intake, so the closer I am to my goal the better.

I've been looking for some new paleo ideas, so if anyone has any recipes that are quick and inexpensive please contribute
