Natural Hormonal Enhancement
« on: July 09, 2007, 11:46:16 AM »
I'll be using this log to monitor my progress using Rob Faigin's "Natural Hormonal Enhancement" diet. The diet is similar to Dr. Mauro Dipaspuale's "Anabolic Diet/Solution", which I've done before.

The diet is based on macronutrient cycling and is low-carb, except for 2 carb-load meals per week which should contain at least 60gr of active carbs per meal with at least 70% being starchy.

I'll still be following the principles of the Paleo WOE except, of course, on the carbs-ups.

Tomorrow I'll begin the 7-day induction period, during which I'm allowed a maximum of 20g carbs per day.

Feel free post post questions, comments, encouragements etc.

Hi Chokeartist,

I haven't read about Rob Faigin's dietary theories, nor Dr. Mauro Dipaspuale's, so I can't comment on those specifically, but I did run across an idea for natural hormonal manipulation through nutritional timing..  see my posting "Ergogenic Supplements- Hype or Real?" on this forum at http://cavemanforum.com/index.php?topic=336.0 for an explanation.  Basically, the theory is that immediately after a workout, your muscles are the most sensitive and receptive to nutrient intake, in a 30-minute window.  By ingesting a high-glycemic carbohydrate (to produce an insulin spike), along with a solution of amino acids and proteins, you can supposedly jump-start the muscles' recovery and repair process by using the insulin manipulation to drive the nutrients into the muscles.  I haven't seen any writings (yet) refuting this theory, so for now, I am assuming it works, and using it for workout recovery.

Other than that bit of hormonal manipulation, I eat a regular paleo diet during the work week, and stray somewhat off it on the weekends, to enjoy some of my favorite junk foods.  Good luck on your regimen- looking forward to hearing updates about how it's affecting you.

Doug

Hey Doug

These 2 articles describe Dr. Dipasquale's "Anabolic Diet". NHE is similar, but allows 40-60g of carbs on the weekdays and only 2 carb-up meals. I've tried the AD before, but the long carb-up period made it hard not to go overboard IMO.

End of day 1.
The only problem I experienced today was that the meat I had in my fridge was too lean, I compensated by eating some fatty fish but my protein:fat ratio was probably a bit off. I'm aiming for 40-50% kcals from protein and 50-60% from fat, minus the 20g of carbs of course.

End of day 2.
Today went well, I'm sure that the fact that I've eaten somewhat low-carb for a long time will ease my transition onto the NHE plan.

Since the Paleo WOE doesn't allow cheese I'm eating almost nothing but meat, it is a bit expensive but delicious. I'm starting to miss my veggies though.

End of day 3.
So far this has been much easier than when did the Anabolic Diet, I'm not really feeling any bad cravings or symptoms of switching from burning sugar to fat. Actually I'm not even sure I ever went back to being a sugar burner after quitting the AD. I hope I can get through this without experiencing the infamous "crash", but if it happens I'll just deal with it.

Sounds great, Chokeartist.. well, as I've mentioned elsewhere, in previous attempts at "dieting", I would cut caffeine, sugar, salt, and fats almost to zero all at once, and on the second or third day of this, I would always suffer a severe crash, with a bad headache and "sick" feeling.  One time I had to take off work it was so bad.  I was apprehensive when going "cold turkey" to the paleo WOE, but the crash never occurred.  I had only the mildest of headaches on the third day.  I'm not sure the exact cause of my previous crashes, but the two times I have switched from the standard junk food diet to paleo, I have only experienced very mild symptoms.  I think it's because the paleo diet is so well balanced..  Hope everything continues to go well for you.   :)

Thanks man.

I did experience a bad crash the first time I tried the AD, I was in bed sleeping all day for 2 days but then my energy returned.

I went to see Metallica last night and had some beers, actually way to many, so I'll have to restart the induction on monday.

I don't' have a problem giving up bread and pasta. But I still occasionally like to have starchy grains that come in dark brown bottles :) with names on them such as Sam Adams.   In human history these types of "processed" grains may have predated bread.  However, I think the glass bottle is a more invention.

Yeah the concert was awesome, they only played the old songs and the atmosphere was great.

It is now the end of the 3rd day of induction, so far so good. I've been shedding water at a steady pace and am looking better by the day, this WOE rocks.

Keep up the good work, Chokeartist..  I was amazed, both times that I've gone on the paleo WOE, how fast the bloating went down- about a week, and my clothes were noticeably looser.  Naturally, most of this was loss of excess water.  But the beautiful thing is that you then start a slow, steady loss of excess bodyfat..  all the while eating filling, satisfying meals and hardly ever feeling hungry.   :)

Will do.

Patience definitely pays off on this WOE, everyone who I've talked to about the NHE and AD has told me that the results after full adaptation (6-8 months) is mindblowing.
