New to Paleo
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:24:43 PM »
Hi All,
I am fed up with my western diet and would like to go paleo all the way.

I initially considered the 'Primal diet' however due to being allergic to raw chicken eggs and to a lesser degree milk I had to look elsewhere.
Aajonus' primal diet makes things easy because his books includes a daily meal guide, is there such a guide for this diet? Or are people more or less experimenting through trial and error?   If someone could give me an outline of their daily paleo diet eating habits I would really appreciate it, something I can use to get started with.  In the meantime I will be researching this forum to get myself properly acquainted.

Welcome Chris! Yes, there are many food journals on the forums that you can browse through, to get an idea of what works for some and what doesn't.

Also, you don't have to eat raw to be Paleo. Our ancestors had learned how to make fire around the same time they learned how to hunt in groups. Raw is a choice, not a requirement, of this WOE ;)

Aajonus' primal diet makes things easy because his books includes a daily meal guide, is there such a guide for this diet? Or are people more or less experimenting through trial and error?

The published guides are mostly of limited use, as they're a compromise between a truly paleolithic diet and modern (and bogus) diet recommendations.  For example, a lot of them mistakenly say to avoid fatty meats, presumably to avoid lawsuits; in the wild, carnivores eat the fattiest meat first!  Of the published sources that are available, Neanderthin probably comes closest to an actual paleolithic diet.

But, the paleo diet is so simple, you don't need a book.  Here's a simple guide:  eat fresh whole meat, fruit, and vegetables.  Drink water.

Avoid everything else, in particular grains, tubers, legumes, and dairy.  There are a few exceptions - you can have small amounts of raw unsalted tree nuts, for example - but you don't really have to worry about them right now.

Be careful about using the food log section as a guide, as many people who log regularly are still experimenting to find the best diet to meet their goals.  Feel free to post questions.

Well in true caveman form...if you can't catch it, club it to death, pick it off a tree or tear it out of the ground don't eat it.

I've discovered my tours of the supermarket now involve only 2 areas fruit&veg and the meat fridge.

Hehe yeah its been awhile since I've been in anywhere but the outskirts of the supermarket.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I'm the same. It's rather nice, as it's not as crowded as the cereal and canned food aisles :D

:o  Okay folks you have been warned.  If you are invited to SleazNONE, samjohn, or Kimbits homes you should bring your own toilet paper as they don't have any..........apparently.  Well this time of year you could go get a leaf out of the yard no doubt.  ;D :D ::)

LOL! End caps FTW! Btw, my boyfriend buys our toiletries at Sam's Club and I don't usually go with him (I bring the dogs to work and if he goes shopping after work I have to bring them home--Sam's Club probably wouldn't appreciate a German Shep who doesn't like strangers).

Although here in Florida there are usually green leaves all year round. Leaves from banana trees are pretty soft, but we don't currently have any in our yard :D

Or you could always scoot your butt across the grass like a cat with dingleberries, lol!

Well while you're all talking about it I found the Thais with the most reasonable method, a little hose and shower head attached to the cistern for a quick spray and the toilet paper basically used as a towel.  Used heaps less paper and worked a treat.  Although not being able to flush the paper and putting it in a bin was not cool.

Working toilets were few and far between on occasions...

I suppose it's the equivalent of the French-style bidets.
