Newby Caveman Ironman!
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:23:26 AM »
Hi All

My name is Anna and I am an ironman triathlete. Despite the 20+ hours of training in peak weeks I am still overweight and I blame carbs!

I am now trying the paleo way and learning how to best adapt it to my training. I doubt I will be able to be totally non carb given the levels of training I do. Paleo for athletes suggests carbs around training. But I want to post my food here and look forward to your comments.

At the moment I am still eating dairy due to advice from a paleo promoting nutritionist who believes this may assist the training whilst trying to do majority no carb!

So here goes:

Breakfast
2 poached eggs, some chicken and some tomatoes

Snack
Handfull of cashews and 2 X clementines

Lunch
Salad with 2 eggs, 1 tbsp mayo (full fat), some pulled ham and some feta cheese

Snack

Cocont Yoghurt

TRAINING - 2.5 hours hill training on bike

Dinner
Home made burger with salad

Don't know where you got your paleo info but just on your list here, the following items are not paleo.

tomato

cashews

mayo

ham

feta cheese

not sure what coconut yogurt is, but if it's dairy based, it's not paleo.

Sounds more like you are following some version of "primal" rather than "paleo". If you REALLY want to try paleo, you should start with a clean slate before you start adding in non-paleo foods.

As for carbs, I'm not an athlete so I can't comment but it seems that most people here use fruit to replenish glycogen stores after working out. Most fruit is paleo, but many will tell you that if you eat a lot of it, you will have trouble losing weight.

As I said I have been advised not to cut out dairy

Why are tomatoes not paleo? Surely they are natural and were available to our ancestors

Our paleolithic ancestors weren't living in America, so they had no tomatoes. New World foods are a grey area - some paleo eaters eat them unless they have a specific reason not to (eg avoiding nightshades for arthritis), some avoid them completely, some make a case-by-case judgement.

To me your diet looks too low on red meat and fat, and yes quite a lot of non-paleo foods there. Still a lot better than living on grains and sugar, though.

If you need extra calcium, you should eat almonds rather than cashews, leafy greens like spinach and kale, and canned fish with the bones in. You could also take a calcium supplement - I give my DD one as she's under 18 so still building to peak bone mass - it has calcium, magnesium and vitD in it.

Eggs are also great for calcium and increasing your fat intake! If you can, go for some organic or omega-3 enriched eggs.
