Obsessed with cooking, photo food diary of a new cave girl
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:54:40 AM »
Ok so here goes, I love cooking and I wanted to do a food diary to track my progress so I shall combine them both whilst hopefully getting some good tips and advice along the way..

For info I understand Paleo is a lifestyle and one that I fully want to embrace but I also want to lose fat, feel great and be a successful Paleo like so many I have read about. I'm 29 5ft 6" tall and 92kg. I've just started a new regime at the gym which involves circuit training As put together by my new Personal trainer and two 1 hour spin classes. I'm currently on day 2.

Breakfast:
2 poached eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, green tea no milk/sugar etc

Snack:
Handful of mixed almonds and walnuts, chai tea no milk/ sugar

Lunch: 2 rashers of bacon, half a leftover chicken breast and a few olives (can't decide if these are Paleo or not...?) plus 5 dates

Drinks; more green tea and lots of water

Dinner:
(Below)
Swordfish steak griddled, mashed carrot and turnip, steamed greens and cabbage with leeks (fresh from my garden) sautéed in the bacon grease which are under the fish

I actually only ate 3/4 of this because I was full :)

I also have to admit that I had 3 squares left of green and blacks 80% organic dark choc so I ate those too- wont buy anymore :-[

Here is dinner:

Looks delicious! Olives probably are a no no due to the amount of processing it takes to make them edible--but I eat them anyway as they are so darn good.

Yum, that looks good!  Welcome Rubellared - I'm new too and I have very similar stats to you (30, 163cm tall (5 foot 5... I think?) and 86kg... down from 89kg since I started, and I love cooking too.

Looking forward to seeing more of your meals :)

Dates are Paleo. For Thanksgiving, we inserted an almond, wrapped it with bacon, and baked them. Delicious!

day 2, 1st Feb 2011

Breakfast: just a banana as I read it's good to train on an empty stomach...?

Gym: 30 mins circuit interval training

Lunch: 3 poached eggs, handful of spinach, 3 olives (need to eat them up) a handful of walnuts and about an 2 inch slice of chorizo

Snack: a few almonds, dates and dried apricots that I picked on whilst cooking dinner  :-[

Dinner: locally caught mixed game diced in a Moroccan style tagine which I slow cooked for 3 hours. Mixed leaf salad, grated carrot, beetroot and ginger slaw with a few crushed almonds and walnuts sprinkled over the top.

Dinner was delicious but I feel like I'm maybe enjoying this too much? Also I'm probably drinking 3-5 chai/green/camomile teas each day. They are unsweetened with no milk- is this ok?

Here is the giant pot of Morrocan stew:

And dinner:

Day 4 3rd Feb 2012

-9 C this morning brrr and my freshly shot pheasant is hanging nicely for dinner tomorrow...but today...

Breakfast:
2 leftover lamb koftas and 2 poached eggs with 8 walnut halts and 6 dates

Lunch:
Bowl of game tagine with a green salad

Dinner:
Pork chop with quarter of a butternut squash (think u call them something else in the US) and spring greens and white cabbage steamed with the juices from the meat poured over. Delish but next time will make 2 as I was chewing the bone for more! On the plus side I haven't snacked at all today but I am having a large glass of red.... It's been a stressful week  :-[ :-[

I'm still drinking lots of chai and green tea with boiled water- is that bad? ( I know the wine is bad!) it feels weird being able to enjoy food that is supposed to help me get leaner weight watchers have brain washed me!- guess I will believe it when I see it but I'm on the right path.....

Day 5 and the snow has arrived

I'm really worried about getting on the scales, I mean I'm doing loads more exercise than before but it just doesn't feel like I should be enjoying my food this much. I wonder if I should be cooking more basic meat and veg without soups or sauces (even those these are all made from Palio ingredients)... Also I'm finding it hard to not have a glass of wine at the weekends, particularly as I live in a country village where the pub is the centre piece of the social scene! Am I just reversing all the good effects of eating zero carbs by having the odd drink?  :(

Breakfast:
I banana before a gruelling 75 minute spin class followed by
1 lamb Kota, small bowl of tagine and 2 poached eggs

Lunch:
I met a friend for a pub lunch which was difficult because I had a large glass of red!
Roast pork belly with crackling and roasted root veg

Dinner:
Pork loin with a blueberry sauce adapted froma recipe from Paleoplan.com with asparagus wrapped in streaky bacon and a quarter of roasted butternut squash. I prop ate 2/3 of this and then the boyf polished the rest off

Your meals are looking so good... I want to come over for dinner hehe!

I'm still trying to work out whether I have too many cheats per week as well.  Ideally I know that it "should" be zero cheats but I just love some things too much!  I don't drink at the moment (too scared - my stomach issues really played up when I drank the last few times.  I haven't had alcohol for at least 8 months now) but I do look forward to the day I will have a nice glass of wine again!  I have nothing to back this up really, but I'd assume that a glass of red wine + its health benefits, or a wedge of hard cheese are preferable to, say, a cheat of a thick slice of white toast with margarine, or a 600mL bottle of Coke?
How are you feeling overall with the diet change + the few cheats?  I haven't noticed any ill feelings on any of my cheats, except for the Peppermint Magnum ice cream that I had once  bad! ... instant bloating and reflux for hours! ... so I don't think they are doing me much harm.  My weight loss would probably be faster if I cut them out entirely, but I'm happy with the way things are going for the moment :)

^^thanks Claves you can come round for dinner anytime  ;)

I haven't noticed any ill effects of the cheats except after the 2 glasses of wine I had yesterday I felt absolutely plastered which is kind of novel for someone that could easily sink a couple of bottles before  :-[ I read somewhere that this is common so at least now I'm a cheap drunk  ;D problem was that I really didn't want to feel drunk so i had to drink about 5 pints of water just to sober myself up...so er maybe the cheats do affect me!....

Day 7- feeling good!

Today was difficult food wise because I'm back to work and I always go to my mums for dinner on a Monday (she is doing Weight watchers) so I had to be really careful not to slip back to the old habits. Btw I slept for 9 hours last night which is normally a lot less on the night before work starts because I start stressing about the week ahead. I'm interested to see if the trend continues next Sunday?

Breakfast:
Green tea, banana, 1 roasted chicken drumstick and a large handful of whole Almonds

Lunch:
Chai tea, 2 raw carrots, 2 chicken drumsticks

Snack:
Chai tea, 5 dates and a small handful of walnuts

Dinner:
Some sort of white fish steamed with mixed veg and ratatouille (I think she had used one of those 1cal spray oils to fry the veg in the ratatouille but it tasted nice enough)

Felt hungry when I got home some munched on another chicken drumstick and a few more walnuts.

NB: when I first read robb wolfs book I went out and bought loads of nuts- then i saw on here that theyre notbgreat for fat loss and I realise I'm prob eating too many but I hate wasting food so once these are all gone I won't buy them again

Q? Are unsweetened natural herbal teas ok to drink?

Q?

How are pork scratchins viewed in the grand scheme of things? I think in US they are pork rinds or is that something different. My local butcher does large bags.. Would these be suitable in the paleo lifestyle for losing fat?

Sorry- always asking questions!  :o
