Well, i totally derailed myself yesterday. I think it was all the fruit I've been eating that finally triggered a full-blown sugar binge. They say confession is good for the soul, so, embarassing as it is...

I ate a variety of chinese food for dinner, followed by strawberry shortcake, later followed by TWO drumsticks (ice cream cones, not birds), three pieces of red licorice, and a handful of potato chips.

I woke up feeling much better than I expected, fortunately. Keeping it clean today - I'll be foregoing all fruit for a while. I can still feel the sugar cravings nagging at me a little, so I'm a little worried, but I think I can get right back on track here.

It's definitely good to log the problem days - more important than to log the good days.

Hopefully you don't have any problem getting back on the wagon.

Unfortunately, it has been hard getting back on the wagon, but I am getting there.

The big thing I notice when I go back to carbs - especially wheat - is the horrible bloated feeling I carry around all day. Yuck.

Boiling up some eggs right now. I have lots of leftover pork roast in the fridge. Plenty of veggies.

Today will be a good day!

Best way to stop cravings is to eat so much of the good food (meat) that you couldn't stomach anything else.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Thanks, samjohn.

I'll try the leave-no-room-for-crap approach.  :)

Finally!!! I've managed to get myself solidly back on track (I've not eaten even ONE of the peanut butter cookies my daughter baked. : )

After a few days of feeling rather lethargic, I'm starting to feel decent again. I've lost three pounds and the bloated feeling that always comes with eating sugar and grains.

Breakfast (today and the last few days): a smoothie, with coconut milk, chia gel (chia seeds soaked in water), blueberries and/or strawberries, and greens (spinach or kale).

Morning snacks: hard-boiled egg, fresh coconut

Lunch: large bison burger with a huge plate of sauteed onions and red peppers.

Dinners: recently have varied widely - sometimes fruit, sometimes eggs and veggies. I'm not usually very hungry in the evenings and prefer to just snack.

Being back in my small, rural town, protein options have become very limited again. I usually avoid factory-farmed meat and eggs both for ethical and health reasons, so obviously some of my limitations are self-imposed. What I can get includes:

free range eggs
bison burger (even at Wal-Mart now, along with a few other cuts of bison that are more expensive so I haven't tried)
tins of sardines
canned wild salmon
canned tuna

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Am I overlooking something?

I'm really lacking energy this past week. If anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Food today:

1 cup coffee
fresh peach
2 hard-boiled eggs
1 small apple with about 1/4 cup almond butter
large spinach salad with bison burger and sauteed mushrooms
small bowl of frozen cherries
occassional nibbles of coconut oil or butter (Kerrygold - that stuff's like crack!)
lots of water

I want to get back to exercising, but I'm so lethargic that it feels impossible. I feel satisfied food-wise, and I'm free of the problems I get eating the SAD: heartburn, gas pains, gallbladder issues, so I know I'm on the right path. But where is my get-up-and-go?

I’d start by leaving out the dairy, it can be an energy zapper…feeling lethargic after eating dairy sounds about right, even in small amounts.

I looked up the FAQ’s on Kerrygold butter and they make it sound all warm and cozy but if you look up the cooling and crystallization process in order to make it soft straight from the fridge, it sounds pretty manipulated to me.

But anyway…you could leave out the dairy and see if you have an increase in energy.  It’s not paleo anyway and why not give yourself every opportunity to feel you’re best.  There are plenty of subs for butter after all  ;)

I see that you are posting your journal here and there. If you are strict paleo with few carbs, you should start feeling more energy after 30 days. It takes 2-4 weeks. Some forums have 30 day paleo challenges.

I am an avid runner and it took about that long before I could start running a full six miles without walking in the last two miles. Anytime I go off and eat empty calories from carbs, I feel sluggish.

Well, I'll just hang in there then knowing there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

Had hooooorible stomach upset this evening - diarrhea, lower stomach cramps. But it was short-lived - feel great now. I remember that happening last time I was eating paleo. And from what I remember, it doesn't last too long.

Food today:

Breakfast: Black coffee, peach, walnuts (prob. 1/2 cup)
Lunch: large spinach salad with bison burger and mushrooms
Evening: peach

May have something else before bed, but not really hungry.

Breakfast: 3 eggs, cooked with lots of butter, black coffee
Morning snack: 1 peach, sliced and topped with walnuts and cinnamon. This was so good!
Lunch: 1 can tuna with mayo
Dinner: TBD

I know, not entirely paleo... But when I don't plan ahead, I at least keep it low carb.

Did yoga last night. Slept well, but still lacking energy today, yawning a lot!

Weight: 152.8

The lack of energy might mean that you are sick.  I find that when I get a "cold" on paleo, often the only symptoms are that I'm a bit more tired than usual and need more sleep.

It might also be that you're not eating much.  It looks like you're coming in at 1000 kcal/day or less.

Thanks, Warren. I hadn't thought about possibly being sick, but you might be right. I've had sick co-workers, and I've had that twinge of a sore throat that usually means a cold is coming on. But that's as far as it's gone. How great is that - that being sick is just feeling a little run down?!

My calories are probably much higher that they seem. I do crave - and eat - lots of extra fat: swigs of coconut oil, and bits of butter.

Breakfast: a huge spinach salad with seasoned bison burger, avocado, and toasted pumpkin seeds. This was delicious!

I enjoy my food much more when there is a variety of textures. Adding something crunchy to soft foods makes all the difference in the world.

My weight is up a bit to 153.4. Wondering of the fajitas I had at a Mexican restraurant had anything to do with this - too much sodium??

As for my weight goals:
I'm 5'7", rather large-boned.
Feel good at about 148, so that's my target.
I started out my return to paleo at about 156.
I'm in no hurry, as I reap sooooo many other health benefits eating this way.

A co-worker told me today that I looked like I'd lost weight. : )

Since I usually post in the middle of the day, I'll just start with last night's dinner:

Dinner: afore-mentioned chicken fajitas, side of guacamole and a little sour cream
Breakfast today: 2 peaches with large handful of walnuts and cinnamon (almost out of peaches!), coffee, teaspoon of coconut oil.
Lunch today: large spinach salad with bison burger and large handful of toasted pumpkin seeds.
