occasionally getting a mental picture of me eating something ghastly like a load of chocolate or guzzling a coke zero.

Haven't given in yet. But do the cravings go away or get worse? Can anyone advise?

Only been eating paleo for a few days, but did spend the 2 weeks before that eating low-carb and yes the cravings get less :)

My weight has gone up :( and I haven't cheated :(

Yesterday

couple of mouthfuls of pork stew,
spare rib pork, carrots onions, turnips.

few madadamias.

Lunch, sirloin steak, fried mushrooms, fried egg. (might be in vegetable oil :( )

Dinner, pork stew see breakfast.

more snacking on nuts in afternoon.

Water and herbal tea to drink.

How long can one expect to plateau. And what can I do to improve? I really have had very few carbs. Just meat mainly.

Unless the weight change is more than a few pounds, I suspect random variation.

There are however a couple of things you could do to improve:

- drop the nuts, or only keep unshelled nuts around so you have to shell them to eat them

- replace the vegetable oil with grass fed tallow or unhydrogenated lard to improve your omega 3:6 ratio.  I find that when my omega 3s get low, I start eating seemingly random foods like walnuts, in what I believe is my body trying to get its omega 3s.

the vegetable oil was only because I went to the cafe for lunch - lack of planning on my part. I use lard, tallow or coconut oil at home.

A packet of 100 grams of nuts is lasting me about 4 days. It's only two pounds up. But its supposed to go down! :)

So my answer is rinse and repeat, and have patience.

Patience is hard for me.

I hate the flap of fat on my stomach. it's gross.
