I'm out of work, broke, and eating paleo is a challenge.

I'm not broke nor am I rich, but I shop by the weekly ads from three different grocery stores. I can't afford or access to grass fed beef so I substitute the best I can with fish oil from Costco or Sam's Club. I like the buy one get 1 free chicken breasts and other kinds of meat. If you have a Winn-Dixie, they have great specials on meat.

I also intermittent fast and that saves money, but it takes time for your body to adapt. I started just once a week.

as someone who works in tailoring, I can confirm this!

In the UK, a 32 waist, 32 leg pant usually measures 34" in the waist at 31" in the leg.  34 waist pants measure about 36", 36 measure 38 or 39...etc!  Every person I measure expresses surprise and dismay that their waist is 2-3" larger than they thought!

You get it in ladies sizes as well, and the effects get compounded over the years.  To whit, I usually take a 16 in 1930s patterns, a 14 or 12 in 1950s patterns, a 10 or an 8 in current UK high street clothes and a 6 or a 4 in the US.  All have roughly a 34" bust.

Mittens? Little furry slippers?

Seriously, I really get angry about feral cats... and rabbits. Actually any kind of domestic animal gone feral, but cats and rabbits most of all. The cats kill everything and the rabbits destroy the land. I dunno about letting them free again.

Been quoted £1.99 per pound for a whole lamb from a very good country butcher.
I shall get that at the end of November.

Halal butcher does lamb half the price of the premium supermarket.

Must get a load of pork belly. I really like that and oxtail for stew.

I have been almost all meat. I guess I must start putting veggies in again.

Shepherds pie with a carrot turnip topping is good Smiley

Do we need to cut calories to lose weight? Well, depends on what you were eating before and what you need.

The simple answer is that you will be able to eat more calories eating paleo than you would eating a standard food pyramid diet (high carb low fat) to either maintain or lose.

If, for example, you had to eat 1200 calories to lose weight on the standard diet, you might well find that you still lost weight on 2000 calories when you changed to paleo. You might gain, however, if you ate 4000 calories while eating paleo. There will be an upper limit but it will vary for each person depending on their age, sex, size, activity level, muscles etc.

I'm not disagreeing with samjohn, I think the composition of your diet will influence what your upper limit might be.

Absolutely.

I'm not saying that you can eat insane amount of any Paleo food and not get fat. I'm sure I could get fat very quickly eating honey and bananas.

I just think abundant amounts of fat tells the body to shed fat, as it does water. Simplified notion I know, but I like it.
