going to show my dumbness now but nightshades?

Tomatoes, Eggplant, Chilis, Gooseberries, Goji Berries, etc...

I still eat Nightshades. Maybe not as much anymore because I find they aren't that tasty without salt. Tomatoes and bacon still find their way on my plate every once in awhile.

Some parts of Cordain's book I strongly disagree with (I think I have revision 1 of the paleo diet, this may have changed) - I was pretty shocked to see "diet cola" in his meal plans.

They are allowed in paleo, but if you have autoimmune issues you might consider nixing them.  Also, they may contribute to arthritic pain.  Simply cut nightshade out for a month and see if you feel better.

I consider them "allowed" personally, however many of the members here do not eat them and have reported improved health in their absence. The logic that nightshade plants evolved chemical deterrents to being eaten (such as capsicum) is similar to the phytotoxins in legumes and grains that keep us from eating them.

Nightshades include tomatoes, peppers and eggplant.  Some people find they feel better if they don't eat them.  They are new world fruits, meaning our ancestors would not have had access to them.  The leaves of the plants are quite poisonous and the family also includes Deadly Nightshade which you might have heard of.
