Been here a little while...
« on: June 21, 2010, 11:02:59 PM »
Hi All. I've been on fairly strict Paleo for nearly 3 months and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a 32 year old male from Austin.

I've had leaky gut and been feeling overall pretty bad for the last 3-4 years and been too skinny my entire adult life (now 5'10" ~138 lbs) Other diets for any of my conditions have always failed. My biggest problem is that many foods started giving me gas. When I get bloated with gas, I start feeling half dizzy, foggy brained, distant, and lethargic. Beans have been out for a while as the gas from them would make me feel incredibly terrible.

I've found sources for grass fed meats, pasture eggs and fresh sardines. I've also gotten a little more in depth and open with my experimenting. I've been making beef and chicken bone broths (including feet, marrow bones oxtail etc, grass fed when possible). Upon request, I have just received about 8 lbs of grass-fed beef fat which I intend to render for Pemmican.

I'm also a recreational cyclist. I am, so far, thriving on the diet, overall. Obviously still skinny, and I even lost some weight that i didn't want to, but I'm feeling more powerful active and my body is starting to look better. About the only things I cheat on are 2 corn tortillas sometimes (once a month) after a ride, a tiny amount of dark chocolate here and there and some dried fruits (organic figs Dates and apricots). A bit of red wine too.

I'm still experimenting (likely will be for a long time). Not everything is perfect and my digestion is still suffering at times.

Mostly wanted to say thanks to everyone sharing research, thoughts and the generally mature discussions.

Welcome to the forum, guys! :)

tdister, I'm in the 'skinny all my life' group too. I'm currently 5'11'' and 147lbs, so a fraction taller and heavier. It's not a nice feeling! It's great to see how well the Paleo diet has helped you! The digestive issues will get better the more you stick to paleolithic foods!

Have you thought about strength training to gain some extra weight? Many of us on here are losing weight/gaining muscle successfully eating this way. And it would likely provide benefits to your cycling too :)

I do lift weights here and there. Mostly keeping a good variety in exercises, but definitely adding in some strength training. i include climbing trees and play exercises quite a bit too.

For my digestion, I've also been eating raw sauerkraut and a little bit of extra cultured goat yogurt. I think I need to get my gut healed up before I can expect to eat enough to gain weight, but we'll see how things happen.

So, you have been gaining some weight?

I'm just going by the mirror. I'm looking a bit more defined for sure, but also skinnier than normal. I'm not going to be getting on the scale regularly. I look skinnier while in shirts but better (IMO) when shirtless.

That's a great way of training! Playing, even if its sports, I find is a great way to exercise because you get to have a lot of fun too.

Your gut will heal better without the goat yoghurt! Yoghurt is not Paleo and dairy products often cause gut problems. Sauerkraut is borderline as its fermented. Just try and keep eating as Paleo as possible and I'm sure your gut will be better in no time!

I've definitely gained lean weight. In my first stint going Paleo last year, I gained about 6-7lbs of lean muscle mass through weight training. I stopped Paleo for a while as, to put it bluntly, I had no money :-\ But I definitely had my best gains and recovery while eating Paleo. Now that I'm back on Paleo, my upper abs are starting to come through and I'm back to my super fast recovery :) However, I'm now training in gymnastics, so muscular mass will increase at a slower rate.

Mirror and tape measure is a good way of recording changes. Bodyweight fluctuates naturally so the scales are not the best way to measure muscle gain. I'm weighing myself every 12 weeks just to see how it's changing over time.

I have exactly the same thing! In a shirt I look a lot skinnier, but if I'm topless or wear a vest, I look a lot better and my shoulders get complimented a lot more. Then again, we weren't designed to wear shirts in the first place :D

Hmm, I'm not sure which side to believe on the fermented stuffs. I haven't eaten either the yogurt or the kimchi/sauerkraut in a while. I avoid fake sauerkraut (the vinegar stuff), but I thought raw fermented was OK for paleo? Probably depends on who you talk ask.

I'm only having a small spoonful of the yogurt at a time and it is sold as more of a medicine than food. It's extremely sharp. The sauerkraut I have to put in smaller jars when I get it or I'll sit down with a fork and eat the whole thing.

I don't find either to upset my symptoms at all. Whether they are helping is another question altogether.

Fermented foods tend to be down to everyone's own opinion. For instance, red wine is fermented grapes so they often make a good choice for when you want to drink alcohol when eating Paleo.

Well, provided neither are upsetting your symptoms you should be okay to keep eating them. However, if you're finding you're having any issues with your gut in the long term you may want to drop the yoghurt and see if it makes a difference :)

I thought raw fermented was OK for paleo?

Yogurt is clearly not paleo, since it is dairy.  That's separate from the issue of fermented paleo foods, about which there might be differences of opinion.
