Cavewoman here!
« on: August 24, 2006, 07:13:34 AM »
Hi Cave woman here!

I am fairly new to this.  I was introduced to this WOE through my boyfriend.

Now I am in the process of learning more about it and making my diet more strict.

I grew up in a Hispanic island; eating rice, beans and meat daily. Also cereal, sandwiches

and a lot of dairy product.  So its been very hard to break away from my eating habits.

I am in my early 20s, very slim and always low on energy.  I did notice an increase of energy

with this diet even though I haven't gone all the way with the diet. Since I can't part from

milk.  I guess I find it comforting in a way.

Did I mention I get hungry every 2 hours.  I eat a lot and yet I get so hungry.  If I skip a

meal I get cranky and can not concentrate, if i skip a meal daily then I feel weak.  :-\

I read daily the post and go to the links.  Theres a lot of useful info on this website.

I especially like the links to excersice routines and recipes  :P

Thanks to all the people who contribute to this website.  I hope more Paleo females join

soon! TTYL

Since nobody else replied, I thought I might wade in here. Sounds like you were raised on a typical high carb diet & addicted to itĖ me too!  Hunger every 2 hrs sounds familiar.  Have you had your thyroid levels checked?  I would not be skipping meals until everything checks out. You may also be iron deficient, but the blood test will confirm that.  If so, be very careful with iron supps as they are not created equal in terms of absorbabilty.

Unfortunately, there is no way around it, youíve got to break the carb addiction!  I broke it over a two week period, but believe me, it was hell!  You are undertaking a whole new way of eating and that takes time. Here is a simple trick that seems to work for me: Always eat protein first, & never eat fat with carbs in the absence of protein.

Now, first and foremost , get rid of everything containing sugar Ė if itís in the house youíre going to eat it.  Try using Stevia as a sweetener.  Itís not great in coffee, but makes killer lemonade and iced tea!  Stop drinking milk but use cream instead (itís lower carb) and it takes only small amounts to give a great mouth feel because of the fat content. Lastly, donít be afraid of fat!  Get more into your diet, especially flax oil, fish oil & olive oil Ė this should help your levels of Omega 3 since most people eating high carb are woefully deficient in Omega 3 but high in Omega 6 &9.  This is fairly basic stuff, but you'll have to do a lot of experimenting to find out what works for you.

Welcome and thanks for joining Cavewoman

Great reply Refit and welcome to the site as well

He is right - your body is running off carbs and you need to transition to getting your stored energy from fat

Your only carbs should be from vegetables (except potatoes and similar) and fruit

The rest should be meat -- fill up on it and try all kinds

There are so many cuts of meat and types of meat that you haven't tried, now is the time to experiment a little

Thanks for the reply Refit,

As the matter of fact I am iron deficient.  In my hectic weeks

I sometimes forget about it.  SO I don't get the necessary amount

of iron I need. I am trying to get better at that ;D . A couple of

months ago I started adding liver to my diet.  I sometimes have a

craving for it and I actually like the taste of it very much.   The

secret is to cook it with wine, raisins and nuts.  It turns out to be

very sweet actually.

I started cutting all of rice, beans, cereal, bread.  Its very hard

I feel better as the days pass.  Now I really don't crave it that much.

My meat intake is increasing noticeably. This website is getting me

really into it.  You feel encouraged to continue in this WOE.

Thanks for the advice Refit and Eric!
