Hello From PA
« on: November 26, 2011, 08:59:20 AM »
Well I'm going to try not to write a novel here... But I'm a 19 year old girl who's done quite a few diets. I was vegetarian for five years, vegan for almost two, and raw vegan for 3 months. I also was low fat vegan (very bad, lost soo much weight). Thanksgiving was my first time eating meat (some turkey) in five years. Basically I feel like starting out vegetarian I had way more energy and felt way better overall, but fast forward a couple years later, and after being vegan for 2 years, I have no energy, am fatigued, need at least 10 hours of sleep, have oily hair, and bad skin. Before vegetarian my skin was flawless and would only breakout with the normal 1-2 pimples every once in a while. The longer I was vegetarian, the worse it became. (Coincidence? I think not.) So I'm thinking I may have a gluten intolerance, which indirectly causes acne. Because as a vegan I would eat a lot of carbs/grains (bread, chips, pasta, etc). Cutting out dairy made little to no difference.

I've been researching the paleo diet a lot and it makes a lot of sense, and I'm ready to give it a go in hopes it will clear my skin among all the other benefits.  I technically started yesterday and my day went like this:

L: 2 scrambled eggs, leftover vegetable soup my mom made (pumpkin, tomatoes, beans, onion, spices), apple, banana, some raisins
D: Baked salmon with dijon mustard and butter, steamed green beans with olive oil, and a sweet potato

I don't normally eat breakfast, I will have a large lunch and then dinner. I know potatoes aren't recommended but I don't regularly eat them so I think I will be fine.  Also the salmon had soybean oil added unfortunately.

Supplements: I have tried waaaay too many to list them all. (B5, Cod Liver Oil, and B-Complex all made my skin worse.) I've also tried Niacin, Chromium, Multis, Flax Oil, Borage Oil with Lecithin, etc. Now I just take Vitamin D, zinc occasionally, and Vitamin C; I also just ordered Chlorella and Spirulina so I will be trying them.

I stocked up on food yesterday with a bag of frozen chicken breast and varieties of canned salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, etc. Money is an issue so is it okay if my protein comes mainly from fish? Canned salmon is pretty cheap and I know that it's the best kind of seafood.

So this is day 2. For lunch I plan on having an omelette with some sardines (no idea how that will taste), salad, leftover green beans, and an apple and banana. I don't know about dinner yet.

Wish me luck! Any advice would be appreciated.

Good luck, hope this is your last diet...because this is not really a diet but a new way of eating...
No expectations, no disappointments!

Welcome.  Good luck on the transition - it will be a big change, though I think you recognize that.

Fish is a fine source of protein.  The fish you are eating are also a high quality source of fat, which you'll likely need plenty of on this diet.  Do try to get sources of fish that include the skin and the fat layer underneath.

As you recognize, sweet potatoes are not paleo.  Beans are also not paleo, though green beans are not as bad as some other beans since they are mostly pod rather than seed.  Don't be afraid to leave the nonpaleo parts of a meal on the plate while eating the paleo parts.

You will not need nearly as many supplements on paleo since meat - including fish - will include more micronutrients.  Do keep using vitamin D since we normally get it from sunlight rather than diet, and most Americans don't get enough sunlight.  Zinc and vitamin C probably don't hurt, though they may not be necessary.

Don't be afraid to ask specific questions if you have them!

Welcome to the forum!    :)

It will take time to make such a radical adjustment but it sounds like you're doing really well. I hope you start feeling healthier very quickly. You might be interested in this site if you haven't already seen it:  http://www.beyondveg.com/  It goes into some of the issues to do with "failure to thrive" (FTT) on vegan diets. It's a more common problem than the vegan literature ever admits to.

I'd recommend adding some extra fat to your diet until you're eating more fatty meat. Are you planning on using butter? If so, a decent slab of grass-fed butter on all your cooked veges will help improve your skin quicker and make sure you're getting lots of fat-soluble vitamins, and it's easy to eat. It's also good for your bone health - without plenty of fat-soluble vitamins your body can't use calcium properly. Coconut oil will help give you energy, and it's good with fish.

Thank you for the welcomes... A brief update as I am now almost 2 weeks into it. (12 days). My skin has had little to no change so far, still breaking out a lot unfortunately. I'm not 100% Paleo, I am focusing more on being totally gluten free since I think that's what my problem is.  But no dairy besides butter, lots of fish and eggs, and a bit of chicken and beef. Also been eating almonds, and I have been consuming peanut butter, which I know is no no on Paleo. (Have to get some almond butter.) Fruit: usually an apple and a banana every day. Oh, and veggies of course. I did have some corn chips and a bit of soy cheese but they are things I can easily cut out, and they are gluten free so I am not too worried.  As for any other changes, obviously it is still pretty early, but I'd like to say I have less brain fog, and *TMI* stools are better- more solid.

I have ordered the Organic Total Body Cleanse from Renew Life, so I'm going to try it and see if I can possibly speed up the healing process a little bit. What I'm thinking is that I messed up my gut from taking a couple months of antibiotics (Doxycyline) and thus developed a gluten intolerance. (I was taking probiotics during the whole period.) What I'm also thinking is that I should just go get tested for food allergies, but I don't have insurance right now so it's not really an option unfortunately.

It's quite frustrating and I am very impatient... But I hope to see some results within the next couple of days/weeks.

Given the lack of results, this may be a good time to consider that gluten may not be the only issue, and to go completely paleo for a few weeks.

Good on you! It sounds like you're making good progress so far. That's a huge adjustment for an ex-vegan.

I would avoid soy and peanuts as religiously as wheat. Even a small amount of either might be enough to prevent your gut from healing. It might also help to use kefir - it contains a lot more goodies than probiotic capsules. Lacto-fermented vegetables like real sauerkraut (not sterilised canned) might help too.
