Hello, I'm new to the site
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:54:47 PM »
Howdy Folks,

I'm 27 and male.

I heard about this diet on a podcast, which prompted me to get Robb Wolf's book. I tried to do the diet once and failed, but noticed even though I only made it a few days on it I felt better with the reduced wheat intake. My downfall was General Iso's Chicken. So now I'm at it again and so far I've done fairly good this week.

Breakfast has been a few spoonfuls of peanut butter or eggs (Not sure if it's part of the diet or not, But I have a huge jar to use up somehow)

Lunch has been a salad or some sort of meat, I did have a cheeseburger one day and didn't eat the whole bun. (It was a business lunch)

Dinner has been a manager special steak, or some sort of meat, maybe some sausages mixed with sauerkraut. I try to put some sort of vegetable with it sweet potatoes are my favorite, pretty much anything but white potatoes.

I have had a few of the KIND Fruit + Nut Gluten Free Bars for a snack and I was wondering if they are okay on the diet http://www.amazon.com/KIND-Almond-Coconut-Natural-Gluten/dp/B0034EDMCW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319226068&sr=8-2

I'm not sure if I will make it to 100% of my food intake since in the Midwest so much of the food has either breading, corn or potatoes in it. But I figure a little bit is better than nothing.

I also have a book called The Wheat Belly on order.

Thank You and I look forward to learning from this forum.

Welcome,  You'll get the hang of it.  So you need to decide if you plan on being Paleo or Primal!  Either way, peanut butter is a no-no.   Sweet taters are Primal but not really Paleo.  Don't beat yourself up over the short haul in teh begining but do try REALLY hard to stay as clean as you can with what you are eating.  Lear the accepted foods and the non-accepted foods and stick with the good stuff.
Good Foods:
Eggs
Beef
Chicken
Fish
Pork
Eggs
Root veggies
Greens
Proper Oils
Animal Fats (50% of your diet)

Bad foods:
ALL GRAINS...
High Carb foods
Tubers
Legumes
Bad Oils

Good Luck!
No expectations, no disappointments!

Welcome.  It sounds like you're going in the right general direction; you can pick up the details as you go along.

Here are a few details if you are interested:

The breading on General Tso's is actually based on chestnut rather than wheat; the big problem with that dish is not the breading but the sugar in the sauce.  If you end up in a Chinese restaurant, General Tso's is not too bad a cheat if you wipe most of the sauce off.  You can wipe it off on the rice then not eat the rice.

Peanut butter is definitely not paleo.  Neither is cheese, nor sweet potato.  These represent the other three of the big four no-nos:  legumes, dairy, and tubers, in addition to grains.  Good vegetables to have are mushrooms and onions, preferably fried in the fat from the meat.  Leafy green vegetables are great too.

The salad is good; meat is good.  Sausage can be okay if it has no nonpaleo ingredients, but most sausage has flour or sugar.

I'm afraid the KIND bars are definitely not paleo.  I checked several types, and they all have sugar (as "glucose") and some form of soy, a legume, in them.  They also had various other nonpaleo ingredients, such as rice and peanuts.

I think the closest you can get to paleo in bar form are larabars, but the dried fruit in them has a pretty high sugar content so you have to keep from eating too much.  Best is to eat whole foods rather than bars.

Thank you to both of you for your responses. I appreciative it. I figure this is going to take me some time to get things right but I figure doing it gradually I will do better than doing it all at once.

I'm learning that It's a lifestyle not a diet. The hardest part is telling my family and friends I've changed the foods I eat for my health and have them support it. I've already been lectured about whole grains being healthy and I need to avoid the fats. Then I've also had vegetation's tell me their diet is better for me and meat is evil.

I've also realized being in the Midwest it's harder than I thought to find healthy food when out to eat.

Any thoughts on a 10 day veggie juice fast to jump start getting into paleo? http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/ I saw this movie on Netflix and I'm not nearly as big as those folks but I am trying to figure out if there is a good way to detox.

WHY???

NO

You need to point your vegetarians in the direction of the book 'The Vegetarian Myth'

The easiest way to start out on paleo is eat nothing processed at all.  Look at it like this - if you can hunt it or gather it, then it's ok

You could hunt
meat
fish

you could gather
seafood/shellfish
eggs
nuts
leaves
mushrooms
roots
berries

You could NOT gather
grains
beans
tubers like potato
LARA bars
anything processed.
dairy

Actually, I disagree.  I think it's easier to just go cold turkey. If you're cheating constantly anyway then it's only a small step to cheat with sugar or grains or processed junk.  If you're strict paleo and eating only unprocessed food then it's a much bigger step.  Also, people who do that often don't see the results they want so give up the diet claiming that it 'doesn't work'.  We see that a fair amount of that here!

The people you have to convince - you can argue with them til you're blue in the face but most people are pretty damn closed-minded and are not interested in learning new things that contradict conventional wisdom and examine the evidence unequivocally for themselves.  You're never going to be able to convince such people so it's best just to let your results speak for themselves!
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

Thank you again to everyone who has posted, I also am glad celticcavegirl told me what I needed to hear.

I think I need to start eating something for breakfast.

But otherwise my meals have been basic.

Mongolian BBQ place, bowl of steak, beef, chicken, crab and broccoli, carrots, peas.

Grocery Store Steaks + Sweet Potato or some sort of vegetable for dinner.

Sausage with Sauerkraut

Lunch has been vegetable and salami.

Also am I supposed to remove coffee and tea from my diet?

So far I feel like I don't have much energy. But I think that's because my body is getting used to the lack of carbohydrates.

I haven't touched any bread or processed food this week. I did buy some Coconut milk but I haven't opened it yet. I have friends coming over for Halloween and am looking for something to make in the slow cooker that is paleo friendly.

Take Care folks.

Welcome and good job, I say go strict too  ;)

For breakfast you can eat eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled or an omelet) with some fruits and berries (if you like you can mix them with some coconut milk for a smoothie) and some nuts like walnuts or macadamias.

Good luck!

Coffee is your choice, I don't drink it but I know many do.

Tea is good, especially if green or herbal.

See thread on drinks under Diet and Nutrition

Thanks I plan to keep on it, my girlfriend didn't understand why I gave her pretty much all the bread, cupcakes and cookies left over from a Halloween party. She won't take all of it. Funny thing is I made a pulled pork in the slow cooker that was I think Semi-Paleo friendly (Pork Butt, Colled Green Leafs, Garlic, Red Onion and some sugar free BBQ sauce) everyone who had it loved it.

I did feel good when I was told I look good, I weighed myself and I only lost 5 pounds in about a week. Maybe I'll switch to Green Tea or just give up the coffee all together. Thanks again everyone.

5 pounds in a week is pretty good, actually.  In the long run, a couple pounds a week is a healthy rate of weight loss.

I'm amazed and I am having better luck finding Paleo friendly things to eat. This morning was my first glass of coconut milk with some lunch meat and blue berries. I'm feeling great today. Lunch was a combination of broccoli, raisins, nuts, mayo, honey and hard boiled eggs. Haven't figured out what I'm doing for dinner yet.
