New from Oz
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:57:29 AM »
Hi Guys,

Been hanging round the site for a couple of weeks it has been great reading, I originally decided to lose some weight last october I was around 198 pounds down to 176 I basically followed the thrive diet by Brendan Brazier, great book I pretty much gave away all dairy, which I felt better for straight away, lots all vegetables (no meat) and lots of fats from nuts mainly almonds and coconut oils, there were some pseudograins included like Quinoa, buckwheat.

But what I did notice that I seemed to losing a fair bit of energy I was training 4 times a week in the gym but only putting in a token efforts at best. So last week I decided to try Paleo and it has been going pretty well I have been having plenty of meat which has increased my energy already and feel stronger in the gym, I love coconut oil and have 3 tablespoons a day, also have been coconut milk for a preworkout and a cup for breakfast, (also keeps me full)

Just a quick question am I going over the top with the coconut milk oil? I do have fair bit of it still a bit nervous that it will increase my cholesterol, but reading the forums there is lot of good stuff on saturated fat is not evil anyway...

Thanks Guys

Howdy, Welcome

Fear not! Saturated fat is not the culprit in heart disease. Carbs are.

Coconut fat is made of medium chain triglycerides. They are fatty acids that are broken down and used by the body in a similar fashion as carbs.

Mate you have to get your hands on all this wild venison that is hitting the market due to culling programs.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

Just wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on helping my mother, she has Type 2 Diabetes, (on 5 different types of Meds to control sugar), pretty much all her life she has been eating grains dairy all the bad stuff, I have been trying to help her by telling her to cut back on breads biscuits, she has been getting better with her eating, having a lot more vegetables and salads, but she falls of the wagon sometimes, she mentions that she gets bad constipation wind from the vegetables and she is getting pretty sick of them.. Also I forgot to mention that her cholesterol is high.

So my question is do you think I should try to get her eat fatty meat coconut oil eggs and nuts? I'm pretty sure she is finding it hard on the salads and vegetables because its not filling enough and that's why she goes back to grains to keep her full.

My concern is her cholesterol is high and adding these foods (some saturated fat) would it make it higher?, I know I have read on here that we should eat more fat but wanted to doubly sure.

Thanks

I would get her to eat the fats.

In women, it's quite clear that carbs are the primary culprit in heart attacks, rather than fats:

My blood pressure is completely normalised on Paleo WOE. My cholesterol is high but when you compare the ratio of good to bad, it is absolutely fine per my Doctor.
