New member from Australia
« on: November 05, 2011, 08:43:50 PM »
Hi all, just joined here today.  I've only been following a caveman lifestyle for about a month now but feeling so much better for it.  I'd probably say I'm more Primal than Paleo.  I can't believe it took me this long to understand what kind of diet we're designed to eat and that most of the conventional wisdom regarding nutrition is flawed.  I've really enjoyed books by Mark Sisson, Sally Fallon and Gary Taubes.  Wondering what else there is out there to discover - hopefully I'll learn quite a few things from this caveman community.

By primal do you mean you eat dairy?

What kinds of dairy?

What are your goals? Just general health or something specific?
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Yes, I'm still having full fat dairy (with the exception of milk - I don't drink it anymore and use coconut milk as a substitution in cooking).  I still eat cheese, heavy cream, Greek yoghurt.  Dairy doesn't seem to trouble me, and while I'm easing in this new way of life, it gives me a lot of meal options.

My general goal was to get my insulin under control as I've been hypoglycaemic all my life.  Since I've cut out all sugars and most starches (apart from the occasional sweet potato), I don't suffer from it any more at all.  I eliminated sugar about a year and a half ago, but it wasn't until I ditched grains as well that it all fell into place for me.  It's so liberating after all these years of having to eat every 2-3 hrs and going through the blood sugar swings.

I've lost some weight and I'm in the middle of the healthy BMI range for my height now.  My goal from now on is to keep good general health.

Welcome bellsy! I also originally decided to try paleo because of blood sugar swings, and it was all fixed very quickly once I ditched the sugar and grains and started eating more meat and healthy fat. Now I eat three times a day and never get low blood sugar. I still have some full-fat dairy too, not much other than the butter as I am lactose intolerant. Recently found I seem to tolerate creme fraiche better than ordinary heavy cream, which is rather nice for an occasional treat with berries.

Welcome!  Eating, living, and moving primal has made me feel better than ever.  Hope you enjoy it.  It does take some adjustment, and a lot of people will question it, but stay with it.  It's how we were designed to live, so it's really pretty easy.  Just let your body instruct you on what it needs.
