New to Paleo - anyone else from Toronto, Canada?
« on: October 25, 2011, 01:41:25 PM »
Hi everyone!

I just started the Paleo diet (lifestyle?) a few days ago, and so far it's been pretty good. I feel like I still have a lot to learn, though, so hopefully this forum will give me some insight!

The journey that let me here (in short):

In an effort to save money during my first year of university, I based my diet around whole grains, vegetables, beans, nuts, cheese, and fruit. I was moderately active, but my diet, combined with my exploration in alcohol consumption, resulted in some weight gain. After the school year ended, I panicked about the weight gain and started doing cardio like my life depended on it, and deliberately undereating. I lost the weight and then some - I loved what I was seeing in the mirror, but felt tired, crabby, and hungry all the time. Tired physically, and tired mentally - the energy to maintain my willpower was exhausting.

I started getting blood sugar crashes. I didn't know what they were called at the time, but it was horrible. Sweating, hyperventilating, black spots dancing in front of my eyes - 20 seconds, and then it would be over. Then I would be INTENSELY hungry, which resulted in a lot of carb-loading. I realized that I couldn't keep on starving myself, and stopped. Afterwards, I noticed that it took a lot more to be full than before - bread/pasta/grains/beans just weren't filling me up like it used to.

The rest of the story is predictable - weight gain, feeling sluggish, depressed, guilty, blah, blah, blah.

So...I did a lot of research, and the paleo/primal method of eating really made sense to me. For the few days that I've tried it, I'm fuller for longer. I'm more energetic, generally happier, and even my skin is better! I'm glad I found this forum and I look forward to learning how to live again (it honestly feels like that).

Welcome to the forum!    :)

I also started paleo because of blood sugar crashes, and they stopped within a week. That was in March this year. Now I'm 25kg lighter, more energetic, generally healthier, and my IBS has gone a way too. Yup, it's good to be living again.

Welcome.

The first couple weeks can have some difficulties, but in the long run, it sure sounds like you'll be better off dropping the grains, legumes, dairy, tubers, and processed foods.

Thanks paleowoman! The beginning has been a bit rough - I was really tired all the time, but the fatigue is lessening each day. :)

Hi, glad to see I'm not alone out here in Toronto!

I've been eating paleo/primal with my husband now for around 2 1/2 months.  At first we had our teens eating paleo as well, and refused to buy bread, cerials, or any other crap.  They staged a revolt.  So while my husband and I love it, it just makes total sense to us, I admit we do buy unsweetened cerial and plan oatmeal and plain whole wheat bread, but also keep the house stocked with paleo-friendly foods and let them make their own choices.

My stomach has never worked better.  I find I just do better without grains.  I don't miss starches.  But sugary things....it depends on the time of month.  We do allow small amounts of dairy, mostly as garnishes to improve the taste appeal of some foods, and as whole-fat cream in my morning coffee.  We're trying to do this reasonably, so that we can maintain it for our lifetime.

My husband and I have both lost around 10 lbs each.  For me, that's all I wanted to lose.  For him..well.. he's getting there.  I wish I'd known about this paleo thing earlier.  My appendix burst a month ago, quite suddenly, and I'm told the biggest cause is chronic constipation, something that a paleo diet has solved, perhaps just too late...

But I'm happy to see others from the Toronto area here, and would love to hear about any new restaurants, grocers, cafe's or anything else paleo coming out of Toronto, especially the east end!!

Welcome :-))

I am new to this forum but have been following Paleo guidlines since May 2010. I have dropped about 60 pounds but about 7 pant sizes. I am in the best shape of my life. I have more energy and just feel incredible. I live in the Port Credit area. Does anybody know where to get some good grass fed beef? I get my game meats from Black Angus on Revus rd.

Keep up the good work guys  :)

Hi Scott - being a student, I'm not strict about getting grass-fed meats, but if I'm feeling particularly luxurious that week, I go to the Healthy Butcher on Queen Street West (downtown Toronto). They can give you all their information about their meat supply and their practices. I also buy their lard/tallow/duck fat, so I don't have to render it myself.

Can I ask you how you lost the weight? Did you exercise a lot? Did you restrict calories? I am trying to lose some weight as well. Although I feel mor energized and at peace about eating in general, I actually gained some weight since I started paleo (about a week ago).

Thanks Guys,

@CINDIEATSMEATS..... lost the weight gradually over a year. I just followed the guidlines of lean meats, fruits ,veegies, nuts and seeds. However I mostly ate grain fed beef  :'( I did have a splash of milk in my morning coffee and I still drank my Beer a couple of times a week ( My cheat  :D) I would say my excercise was moderate. I play hockey goalie a couple of times a week in the winter months and would mountain bike a couple of times a week during the summer. With that being said, I broke my collarbone biking and was incapacitated from excersice for 10 weeks. I still lost during that time.

In recent months I have upped my excersice considerably. I am going to the gym about 3 times a week and participate in my class' physical education class. In fact I have put 10 pounds back on but my body is much leaner and I have maintained my waist size. I have also changed my milk in the coffee  to almond milk. I have added more game meats into my diet in the last couple of months as well.

I love reading what others are doing and what works for them. I lovethe Paleo lifestyle and will probably become stricter and stricter as my journey progresses. Keep up the good work everyone  8)

@Puck22...  I'm thinking the same thing, about getting stricter with the paleo over time.  I've made huge changes to my diet, eliminating the grains, cutting the packaged foods and hidden sugars, but some things still aren't quite perfect (I still use storebought sauces for some things like salad dressings).  I took all the big steps, all the big changes, but I know I'm not perfect and there are things that over the next year I will begin to tweak until I get exactly where I want to be with this.  I'm hoping that the longer I stick to it, the easier it'll be to make good choices when eating out, and when socializing.  I tried to give up cream in my coffee, but couldn't acquire the taste for almond or coconut milk in it--though I did manage to adjust to the lack of sugar in it (and I am lactose-intolerant, so I should kick the dairy habit--but what good are tacos without cheese??  I can do without the shell, but not the cheese and plain yogurt in place of sour cream....)  I'm weaning myself off diet coke, still.  I don't have it every day.  It's a treat food for when I want something sweet.  I can't afford grass-fed meats, but I do buy the nitrate-free bacon.  I'm already a freak when it comes to food in public.
