Pickin up Paleo
« on: December 05, 2011, 06:25:36 AM »
I have been 'flirting' with the paleo lifestyle for a short time. Have several medical issues (overweight, diabetic)that I think would greatly benefit from what I have read about this type of eating. So much of it makes sense to me though I must admit I find it difficult to follow. Went searching for some help and guidance and found here. Hope to help as much if not more than I get helped.  ;D
I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.

Welcome.

It's pretty simple:  eat fresh whole meat, fruit, and leafy green vegetables, and drink water.  Limited amounts of tree nuts, such as walnuts or macadamias, are also okay.  The meat should be full fat.  Women may need to limit fruit intake for best weight loss.  Eat and drink noting else - no grains, legumes, tubers, dairy, or manufactured foods.

Monitor your blood sugar levels and be prepared to reduce insulin use if you adhere to this diet strictly.

Hi, and welcome! Paleo should certainly help. I found one of the best things about paleo was how simple it was to get going. Work out the "in" foods, and eat only those in whatever quantity suits - a diet plan doesn't get much easier than that. I did Weight Watchers for a time last year, and I did lose a bit of weight, but it was so hard by comparison! On paleo the weight fell off effortlessly, I never had to feel hungry, and I never have to weigh, measure or count anything.

You might find this book useful:  http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Bernsteins-Diabetes-Solution-Achieving/dp/0316182699/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323131379&sr=8-1  He advocates very tightly controlled carb for diabetes, and goes through a lot of good info about how to monitor and adapt insulin and other medications while changing your diet. The info about meds is very applicable for diabetics starting paleo.
