sick of being fat and unhealthy
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:09:31 PM »
Hi all Im new to this forum and the paleo diet.I'm going through menopause but I wont use that as a major excuse(but a minor one for sure)that I'm about 60 pounds heavier than I should be.I just feel out of control and also very ashamed that Ive,in my mums words, let myself go! Ive stocked up and found a source for grass fed beef and start my new eating plan tomorrow,Any advice would be really appreciated as I think I will need a bit of a push when those bread and potato, lentil soup, and perogie cravings hit.those are the foods that made me what I have become today(along with a hit list of other horrors like cheese and sugar)

Welcome.  You have come to the right place!

Advice:

- Throw out the bread, potatoes, lentils, etc.  If it's not in the house, you can't grab it to eat in a weak moment.

- Don't be afraid of eating fat if you are hungry.  Definitely get grass fed beef with fat on it.

- In the first couple of weeks, you will feel some fatigue as your body adjusts.  This will pass.  Drink plenty of water during this time - actually just drink plenty of water period.

- You will likely see substantial water weight loss in the first week or two.  Don't be disappointed when the rate of weight loss falls.  It took years to get to where you are; it may take a year or two to get out of it.

Stick with it, and you'll be feeling better soon!

Welcome to the forum.   :)

I'm 45 and lost 30kg since March on paleo without even trying. (I didn't start doing paleo for weight loss, but it's a nice side effect for sure.) I have loads of energy, my feet and knees don't hurt any more, I sleep better, my IBS is gone, and so on. I feel like a new me!

Your Mum's words must have hurt, but hopefully they will prove to be the catalyst for a new life ahead. Don't be ashamed - it is very easy to get overweight in middle age. The official health advice sets people up for failure, so it is not your fault. I got overweight and sick by trying to follow the official low-fat "heart healthy" dietary guidelines for 20 years. The good news is you can do something about it now you've found paleo. Most people who start paleo overweight find the excess drops off naturally.

My experience was the key to controlling cravings is having had enough paleo food. If you are getting cravings you probably haven't had enough meat and/or fat. I have three meals a day, and I have meat, fish or eggs with every meal, enough to get about 30g animal protein per meal. That's a big change from how I used to eat! Then add enough fat to keep you going to the next meal. That takes a bit of trial and error to work out how much you need. Vegetables are for variety and to make you feel pleasantly full at the end of the meal - they aren't what keeps you going through to the next meal. Until you've got it sussed, make sure you have paleo snacks available. Don't snack on carbs only though, always have protein and fat with your snack or you can get a blood sugar rebound.

Remember you should never have to go hungry on paleo. If you are hungry you are always "allowed" to eat, just make it paleo. It's when you're starving that resolve crumbles.

Glad you're taking steps to get yourself healthy!  Getting back to eating the way our bodies were designed to eat sure made me feel better.  You will find, I think, that after an adjustment period, you will have fewer and fewer cravings for the old things that you used to eat.  I find myself happily turning down desserts, etc. now, and it's no longer feeling like a sacrifice to do so.  I have a lot of things on my website that may help you, as well.  I don't put the link here, as that's not the purpose of the forum. It's on my profile if you want to look at it.  Keep up the good work!

Hello,

I'm feeling some of the same things as you and cheese is my absolute weakness too! Not to mention those tiny Halloween bars and yes.potatoes.. So far I've been eating beef, carrots, chicken and usually eggs for breakfast. A black coffee here and there and lots of water--no cheese, no sugar, no grains-just simple foods-actually makes things alot simpler :) When I get hungry I have a banana or some cut up apple pieces and more water. I'm feeling pretty good, more calm actually and not so tired after I eat. I'm actually energized instead of needing to rest like before  :) The challenge will be on today as I make shortbread cookies for an upcoming party lol Good luck with everything!
