started a week ago - my journey so far...
« on: November 16, 2012, 05:51:30 AM »
Hi everyone,

I started this new lifestyle last Friday and thought I'd share my experience and, hopefully, get some feedback/tips from you all.

My goals: to lose weight, gain energy and live longer!

In the last year I have been suffering from low energy - constantly tired and low in mood, I also ballooned in weight putting on 2 stone (28 pounds) and thought I'd give this Paleo way of life a go.

Starting weight: 223 pounds (6ft 1 bloke with a belly!)

Last Friday I went for it. I have been grazing during the day on nuts and berries and drinking lots of water and green tea (no milk, no sugar). I have cut all agriculture and dairy and processed foods from my diet (I lived off 'ready' microwave meals). I still have my morning coffee. Then, in the evening I have a Paleo 'feast' - meat, eggs, steamed veggies, berries, fish; as much as I want/need.

The first two days were hard. Headaches/stinging eyes/no energy/very hungry...

...then it got a lot better. I didn't crave carbs/sugar and didn't feel hungry - I have gone a couple of days with no grazing of nuts and fruit and just having an evening paleo meal. My mood and energy levels are elevated and I feel good (still have bad moments in the day, but a glass of water seems to sort that out) and I feel a lot less bloated and thinner - 'love handles' and belly are noticeably less flabby.

Weighed myself today...

...211 pounds!

My goal is: 186 pounds -  I was that 2 years ago and feel like that is my 'fighting weight'.

A long way to go, I know - will stay on this plan of only eating in the evening (grazing during day if necessary) until I hit 186, then will eat paleo meals through the day as I want/need them.

This is a great way of life so far...would be grateful for any thoughts/tips...

cheers

Now 11 days in...

...have cut grazing down to a minimum and have felt really bloated due to drinking so much water...

Also - a somewhat delicate subject, but am not really having poos; every couple of days and not much to report...is this normal?

Energy is constant throughout the day (no more peaks and troughs I had before starting this) but feel a little 'dreamworld' sometimes throughout the day and lack a bit of concentration; but I don't mind it too much.

Now 209 (was 223) - aiming for 186...

any thoughts...?

cheers

Sounds like you are doing well so far.  The first week's weight loss is mostly water weight; after that, an additional 2 pounds per week is a good sustainable rate.

You may have less poo on paleo as you are eating nutrients better utilized by your body.

If less poo doesn't cause you a problem, then don't worry about it.

If it does cause a problem, as it did for me (too many years of poor diet left me with diverticulitis), make sure you eat enough fat. I found that eating plenty of animal fat prevented me from getting constipated.

I also drink some sort of probiotic most days. I make my own water kefir which I think helps with most bowel problems.

Also, when your body gets used to how much water you drink, you shouldn't feel so bloated as you rehydrate properly.

Sounds like you're doing well.

Good on you. Good work.

I am also in the same boat, contemplating Paleo. I am a bit of a sugar addict so think I just have to take the plunge.

Do you have any good resources for Paleo? I think about buying a range of books and testing or should I just go for it? LOL

One book I'm looking at is www.thebestpaleocookbook.com don't know if you can give any feedback?

As for the poo situation I agree probably your body is taking on nutrients it needs so less poos!!

Well keep up the good work!!

Slipped this week - added potatoes and cheese to my diet. Had the afternoon slump again and went up to 206 pounds. Cut them out now and feel energised. Now 201.
Miss cheese and potato. :(

Stick with it, and you'll get used to it.  It took me about 6 months to quit considering bread to be "food".  Now, I'd no more consider eating bread than eating a paper plate.

Also, I now agree with Warren Dew -  you wouldn't get me near a slice of bread - used to love toast and marmite, but no more. Still love cheese, though...;)

Today is the first day of week 3 for me.  I've actually gained a little weight but I'm a special case.  When I started I was coming off of a severe infection And 3 weeks flat on my back.  I lost 25 pounds during this time so I'm sure my weight gain is due to recovering lost muscle mass and having a good appetite.  I feel great though.
