Starting the year right
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:35:18 PM »
Hello all! I wanted to introduce myself as hopefully a semi-permanent this forum as I try paleo again for the second time. A coworker put me on a 30 day paleo challenge this past summer and while it was difficult, I did it and felt stronger because of it. However, being of Asian descent, I could not let go of my rice, my noodles, anymore importantly, my sweet tooth.  I reverted back to a carb-filled train wreck for the holidays and want to make things right for 2012. The first time around, I honestly did it more to complete the challenge...to prove to myself that I could. This time around, I'd ideally like to drop a few lbs and become healthier overall with more energy. My saving grace is I do love to cook and am always up for trying a new recipe.  My one concern in going into paleo this time around is the initial " low carb flu" they talk about... My first three days on paleo the first time around we're miserable and I was less than pleasant, to say the least.  Furthermore, I was constantly hungry and that did not add to my pleasantness. This time, I think I will be better armed with snacks like peanut butter, celery sticks, and hard boiled eggs. I way over did the nuts the first time around and ended up gaining a bit of weight. Womp womp .any tips on how to not stay hungry? Also...since I've been reding conflicting things on this: are sweet potatoes okay in a caveman diet?

Welcome to the forum!

Peanut butter is definitely not paleo. Peanuts are legume, full of antinutrients and bad fats. Then to make it even worse, most peanut butter is hydrogenated and has sugar added. If you must use a nut butter, use something else, but too many nuts isn't a good thing as you already found out.

On paleo you should never have to feel hungry. If you are hungry, eat something! Just make it paleo. And make a mental note that next time you need a bigger/fattier meal.

Meat is your friend, especially fatty meat. It is very hard to overeat meat, as you start to feel sick when you've eaten to much, but at the same time if it's a fatty piece it's very sustaining. Things like slow-cooked beef or pork ribs or lamb shoulder are very satisfying. 70% beef mince is versatile and has a decent amount of fat in it. Go for grass-fed if possible.

Sweet potatoes are considered primal but not paleo. Some people eat them. I eat them as an occasional vegetable, but not as a major source of calories. If you're not in athletic training and trying to lose weight it's probably better not to eat them.

Base your meals on meat or fish with non-starchy vegetables, and keep making the meals bigger and/or fattier until you no longer get hungry. If it's a fish meal, a good way to make it more sustaining is to cube up a tray of veges eg carrot, parsnip, beetroot, zucchini, and roast it in beef fat.
