An unfortunate event...sort of
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:57:26 PM »
I call a call tonight that we have to report to work early tomorrow, 6 am, yuck!  But, that isn't the worst part.  The bad part is we have to wear blues.  I just tired mine on and my pants are MUCH to big.  I look like a clown.  Before I started paleo I didn't think I would ever lose the weight, I had been struggling for 3 years, and I got rid of my smaller pants.  I thought at the time that I would never lose the weight and that my time in the Air Force was limited.  Now?  Darn it, I need smaller pants!

SavageDieter told me not to get rid of them.  I rudely told him off, pointing out I would never lose the weight.  I was adamant. Well, he was right.  I should have held on to them.

So, I get to go to work looking like a goofball.  Hopefully they let us change into our other uniforms so I don't have to be embarrassed in front of my patients.  That or I am making a lunch time run to the thrift shop!

I guess I should clarify.  I am excited that the pants are too small.  The problem is I am fearful of being 'yelled' at.  I am at a rank where I should have a serviceable uniform ready at all times.  I am sure my superiors will give me grief.  I don't like that.

No, I am enlisted.  In the Air Froce we all wear blues :)  I found a friend that is about my size, she is a Reservist, so she doesn't need hers tomorrow.  I borrowed them.  They are a tad too short, but FIVE sizes smaller than mine and fit well otherwise.  I think I am better of with slightly short than 5 sizes too big  ;D

The chow hall at Tinker was so full of crappy processed and salty foods I had to cook in my dorm room for every meal to eat Paleo.

Am I wrong or is the Air Force(personnel) getting fatter and fatter?

Hey fellow college student (TWC^)! I also cook everything in my dorm. I got off my school's meal plan because of my soy allergy ("Yes! I scored!").

Wow, NutMeg! Great problem to have. I am jealous!!

I am a college student now. I was commenting on my time in the Air Force at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma. I would visit the chow hall and sometimes all they had to eat was spaghetti along with all of the chips and ice cream and other crap. You'd think that nutrition would be a bigger priority in keeping servicemen and women healthy and fit to do their jobs. Plus, it just looks terrible when you see an obese military member. Not very reassuring when you think that these are the people involved in national defense.

The Air Force now has a huge push for 'health'.  The dining facilityies should have better options now, at least they have a salad bar and a lean meat choice.  The AF is also seperating people that can not meet fitness standards, which includes a minimum abdominal circumfrece.  For women if your abdominal circumfrence is above 35 inches yiou are erolled in teh Body Composition Improvement Program.  That program is run by a registered dietician and often is a calories in/ calires out diet that is LF and HC.  I followed it for 3 years with no measureable success.  Then I went paleo/primal and have lost 30+ pounds and reduced my BF considerably.

There are many more over weight people in tehmilitary now than in the past. I was one of them.  But, I did have a legitimate medical condition.  In the Fall of 2005 I gained 40 pounds in 2 months after the birth of my daughter.  I had been losing weight steadily.  I was loosely following the Body For LIfe Plan, minus the supplements and staying fairly LC. But doing the HIIT and weight lifting the program calls for.  I was able to get to about 170 pounds by Sept, the baby was born at the end of July (I had been 205 at teh end of my pregnancy).  By Christmas I weighed 210 pounds.  We knew something was wrong.  Turns out tha tmy thyroid had completely stopped functioning.  I was very sick.

FInally finding a way of life that allows even someone with severe hypothyroidism lose weight has been a life saver!

Wait ... the Air Force cares how you look in uniform?

Okay, just kidding.

If you get in this situation again before you can alter your pants or buy new ones, you can tuck them at the sides between belt loops.  Not ideal, but it might pass inspection.  They really ought to be happy that you're losing the weight.

They should make you the dietician!

Warren.  I have actually considered going to school to be a dietician.  I am just afriad Iw ould have to suffer thorugh 4 years of hte standard 'healthy' diet BS before I could get registered and I mgiht want to claw my eyes out playcating the professors.

Oh, and the problem with the pants was not the waist, it was the legs themselves.  I should take a photo and post it..lol

Many RD's are employed by hospitals, health clinics and nursing homes.   You can suffer through 4 years of 'healthy' diet BS to get your degree but then you may not last through your first week at a 'mainstream' facility.

You would need to find an alternative health clinic or work with personal trainers like Wlfdg or start your own private practice.

This is true. Hopefully I would get assigned to work in teh HEalth and Wellness Center.  I would be a lone duck in charge of the program for wieght loss, etc.  I think I could make it work ;)  Now, if I was in the hospitals, not sure how much freedom I would have there, but the number of true hospitals in teh military are declining.  So it is more likely I would be in a HAWC since every base has one  ;D
