Any former candy makers out there?
« on: January 22, 2010, 07:17:10 AM »
Hi!

So everyday now I have been using coconut oil in my coffee and tea.  I also add a smidge of honey to my tea.  Yesterday I attempted to go to work (I'm very sick with a bad cold right now) and was debating how to get my coconut oil to work for my tea.  So...I just took a very tiny tupperware container and added 1 tbsp of coconut oil and about 1/2 tbsp of honey, closed the lid, chucked in my lunch bag and went on my way.

I ended up coming home from work (too sick ugh) and later in the day when I had tea opened my container and got the most marvelous idea.  I wonder if I can make more of these in candy molds or something.  Coconut oil is wonderful for staying solid at room temperature!  I figure if I gently heat them together and then put them in candy molds in the fridge...they'd solidify and then be portable?

I tried some terrible terrible 100% dried honey tablets last week and they were disgusting.  Basically tasteless....not honey flavour at all.

makes sense that it would work but how paleo is honey?

I wonder if it would be too tempting to keep popping them into your mouth if they are good.

honey is paleo!  I don't have any sweet cravings at all so I'm sure I could resist those.  And well of course at least if I do have some...they are paleo and full of good fat.  My girls had m and m's the other day sitting on my lap and didn't even cross my mind to eat one!  I would never have believed that I could get there (and never believed all the people on  here when they said that) but I can resist!  I think once I got my head wrapped around that those kinds of foods are slowly killing me...easy give up!

You guys are so lucky! I can't eat honey.

More than a teaspoon and first I get gut pain, then there's that feeling of impending doom, then my throat and chin start itching, then I can't breathe, and my face turns bright red.

It's miserable.

I think sugar cane is paleo. It's a stalk like bamboo, you peel off the outside and chew on the inside. Not easy to get to, but good. I would go for sucanat or, if I can find it, cane juice, not white sugar. I have heard people from cuba eat large amounts of cane juice, yet have very low incidence of diabetes. Perhaps the molasses has enzymes that aid it's digestion?

Of course, I will wait until I reach optimum weight before playing with that.
Change requires you to scream, I'M NOT GONNA TAKE ANY MORE!...and then you don't.

I had sugar cane in West Africa. The key to sugar cane is that it is quite frustrating to eat. You are chewing a sweet but fibrous treat. Like trying to lick the sweet out of a tree bark. A small piece (5in) can last you a couple of hours and will still be mostly intact by the time you toss it out in frustration (and thirst).

I've also had sugar cane juice in Brazil. It's called caldo da cana. I was a youngster then so I can't remember it exactly, but I don't remember it being so sweet. Probably because most of it was added ice and water and the fiber was still there somehow.

Conclusion: the variants of sugar cane you hear about people "eating" are completely different from the "evaporated cane juice" (AKA sugar + water) that the food industry adds to "food" or sells.
Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

The "Seven Deadly Sins"

• Grains (wheat/rice/oats etc) . . . . . • Dairy (milk/yogurt/butter/cheese etc)
• Refined foods (salt/sugars etc ) . . • Nightshades (peppers/tomato/eggplant)
• Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . . • Legumes (soy/beans/peas)
• Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc)

thanks tarlach.  I feel honey is paleo enough for me to enjoy in my tea once or twice a day.  It's easily as paleo as coffee, IMHO.  I get wild honey from a local beekeeper down the road from me.  She's very informative about honey.  The bees in your local area also help your immune system because there are enzymes that end up in the honey.  It has trace minerals in it as well.

I came across a very good article on people who use honey to wash their acne prone face and then moisturize with coconut oil after.  Their skin is beautiful because of the enzymes that are contained in wild honey.

Well it being antibacterial would help with acne, but I'd say the coconut oil and not using soap would be the most beneficial parts of that method.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
