Bit of support needed
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:03:59 AM »
Hi, I know I have not been here long but you are a really good crowd and I feel I can be straight with you.

I am under terrific pressure at work to the point where at the end of a month of 14/16 hour days I want to scream at someone. I am daydreaming of walking out of here and over to the pub and sinking a shot or 3. This has always been my way in the past.

I am NOT going to do this but how do you relieve stress without the benefit of alcohol?

All advice gratefully received.

I love my computer, all my friends live in it.

Do you have any hobbies that you love doing? Hobbies and especially exercise are a great stress relief. I've always HATED high impact, cardio workouts but absolutely love yoga! Maybe you could look into yoga? Check out Richard Hittleman's 28 day yoga plan book...it seriously changed my life.

Other hobbies might include musical instruments, artwork, writing, etc. Maybe just keeping a journal of your day/feelings would help. I know it's easy to resort to alcohol or food to ignore our feelings. It's hard to own up to those feelings and really FEEL them but I encourage people to do it and not hide from them. We have emotions for a reason.

Good luck and I hope you find a good resolution!

I hug and squeeze my daughter, but that may only work with a small child.

I think the hobby suggestion is a good one.  Whatever you enjoy spending your free time on the rest of the year, half an hour or an hour of it might work.

A nice, hot bath or shower helps me sometimes.  I do sometimes have a drink or two now, but I didn't while actively losing weight.

If it must be food related, some good bacon always helps!

Oh dear, I have not explained myself very well.

It is kind of just now. January is always like this.
I have loads of hobbies and I go to lots of conventions and associated stuff.
Just now though when the pub looks so tempting.. What now?

I am literally up at half 6 in the office by half 7/8 then working until 10 or 11 - home to bed etc.

On 1st February it is all over. Once a tax return is late, it is late and that is it.

thank you all
:)

Erm, tough question. I just don't let things stress me out that often. If your solution to stress is to eat or drink it away, then you probably never actually learned to deal with stress properly on your own. As hokey as it sounds, try reading through The Enchiridion which is old greek philosophy about... well, stress and worry and that sort of stuff.

That said, the hardest thing to do when stressed out is to calm yourself down. I like to be outside, in the woods. Go for a walk, say at a local forest preserve or something.

The Enchiridion is good, but I think The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is better and more practical.

Other good ways to relieve stress:
1) Sex
2) Marijuana

I usually punch a door or cabinet.

Punching bag works well for me. Or chopping a hell of a lot of wood.

But to be honest, if I feel like a glass of wine or shot of vodka/tequila, I have a few. Only takes two drinks to get a Paleo eater a bit tipsy anyway, and there is some evidence to suggest that to drinks is better for you than zero drinks.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Since going Paleo I never feel like that anymore.

Pre-Paleo Solution;
A long walk in a quiet place after listening to Slayer, Disturbed, Megadeath, SOD, etc... for about an hour. Followed by sitting in the dark listening to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon being "Comfortably Numb". Floyd makes everything better. For immediate cures I listen to Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin can change my whole day!
Walking isn't exercise, it's locomotion!

Which you can also find there. I find it long winded, but also good

You'll probably get toasted just breathing in a pub.

Since it's late when you finish - I would go for getting a punching bag you can pound on and some Everlast boxing gloves..

Completely at the other end of the scale - try poetry - Mary Oliver if you love nature - she's an American poet but you can get some of her books in England, my sister is a fan and she lives in Dorset.  Mary also has "By Blackwater Pond" on tape - some of her best poems are on there.  She's a New England poet - by far one of the best -I always read her stuff when I need calming, like you I work long days and these are my two fave ways to destress.

Cheers!
