Blood Pressure
« on: December 06, 2011, 11:00:09 AM »
Hi.  Does anyone have any experience with blood pressure changes on the paleo diet?  I began the diet 3 months ago and my blood pressure is consistently about 10 points higher than before I began.  Otherwise, my health is responding well to paleo.
Thanks!

On my paleo influenced diet I may have found the opposite.

I was diagnosed with hypertension a few years back and prescribed first beta-blockers and now ramipril -an ACE inhibitor.
I wasn't that happy when it was suggested that this would be a rest of life scenario, but I've been taking them anyway(2.5 mg -one of the lowest doses)
Recently I messed up reordering my prescription and ended up going 3 days without medication. Before taking a tablet I tested my BP with a machine I used when I was first diagnosed -it was something like 115/75: not exactly hypertension.
I didn't take a tablet nor the next day and in the meantime got myself a serious BP machine (upper arm as opposed to wrist measurement)
I haven't had medication for 2 weeks and record my BP 2/3 times a day.

here are a few recent readings121/80, 123/80, 109/72, 108/74, 123/80, 110/72, 116/73, 106/66, 120/81, 127/82, 118/78, 97/60 (that was after a few beers -sorry paleopeople)

prehypertension is usually flagged at 140/90 or 135/85 for home testing so I am quite happy.
As i hadn't done my BP regularly I can't say that it is a direct result in my change of WOE. I haven't checked in to my doc about this yet -when I do I'll check machine calibration against his. It'll be interesting to see what he says anyway.
Of course I don't condone taking these decisions without doctor's advice!

I was investigating ramipril on the internet and it appears to have a number of benefits, but if anyone has info on damage caused by long term use please let me know.

Ramsay I think most people's blood pressure goes down on paleo, probably why you haven't had a flood of replies. DH has had no change, which he was a bit disappointed by as his is a little higher than he'd like, not high enough to need meds just a bit over normal.

Blood pressure usually goes down with lower carb intake.  In fact the commercial diet products like Medifast  actually warn about this on their web sites, saying within 10 days you may need to visit your doctor to adjust blood pressure medications. (my mother did Medifast in 2006).

This blood pressure cure protocol may give you a clue.

Well, this would definitely work for me since I would stop eating and eventually drop dead. Problem solved.  ;)
