Breakouts
« on: December 19, 2012, 07:14:43 PM »
I've been following Paleo diet very strictly for the past 9 months. The only negative reaction I've had is pimples. I haven't had any in almost 20 years and now it's like I'm a teenager again. I constantly have 1 or more. I've changed to all natural products. Could that be the cause?  Or is it the food?

Need some detoxes / cleanses. Colon cleanse, kidney cleanses, liver flushes.
It helps to do 1 day or 3 day diluted juice fasts.
I'm partial to raw paleo diet.
There's also the possibility of too much protein.
Also the quality of your food.

Other non food, rest, chemicals you put on your body, etc.

Can you tell us what your diet is made up of specifically - in particular, what kinds of fats and carbs you have, and any cheats that you have?  Also, are you losing weight?

Increased fat intake gives some people slightly greasier skin, could be a contributing factor.  Also, some theorise that paleo increases oestrogen/testosterone, so that could influence your skin

Shame though, as most people have *less* breakouts on paleo!

Thanks everyone. To answer your questions: I have already tried a 3 day raw veggie smoothies cleanse. I eat only grass fed or pastured meat.  I eat lots of veggies, small amounts of fruit, an occasional sweet potato. I cook with coconut oil, or bacon fat.  I also eat fermented foods and drink lots of water, green tea and kombucha .  My only "cheats" are occasional paleo cookies or paleo banana bread like at thanksgiving, birthdays and Christmas. I did read where using coconut oil on my face at night might help. Has anyone tried that?

You mentioned five carb-containing foods that can give me breakouts if I eat too much: fruit, sweet potato, kombucha (especially more sugary varieties), paleo cookies, paleo banana bread. The last two are especially problematic for me. Zinc helps counter the zit-producing effect of carby foods and since my zinc levels have increased in recent years, my tolerance for carbs seems to have improved some and it takes more carbs to give me zits. YMMV.

I've noticed a distinctive relationship between fat intake (particularly omega 3 fatty sources like fish oil) helps with keeping my skin in check. Having said that, I haven't ever really had bad skin.

Are you supplementing for omega 3?
