Changes in digestion / very different fecal odor
« on: October 23, 2014, 07:32:37 AM »
I've noticed that after I switched to eating strictly paleo, with large amounts of plant fiber in my diet, my fecal odor changed dramatically. The new odor can best be described as some kind of farm odor, perhaps somewhere inbetween cow and sheep dung, though not as strong. It's kind of a sweet fecal smell that should be familiar to many. It's far removed from that standard, really terrible fecal smell that you normally smell after someone else just used the toilet.

I'm curious to know if it's just me or if others notice the same thing? Slightly worried I might have an imbalance in my gut flora, but my digestion is the best it's ever been, so I think not.

The same has happened to me.  In my case, the sweet smell smells like hydrazine, which is an indicator of the ketone bodies that are produced when one is in ketosis.

Okay, good to know it's not just me. I'm definitely not in ketosis and haven't been since I began eating paleo some months back, so my guess is that my composition of gut bacteria has changed to better digest plant material, hence the smell being more similar to the smell of herbivore feces. An example of what I eat during one day could be 2-4 eggs, 200g sardines, 300-500g salmon, 50g green salad, a tomato, an avocado, a carrot, a bell pepper, 1/2 grape fruit, a handful of walnuts, 300g blueberries, 4 strawberries, 1/2 broccoli, 1/2 banana, 2 medjool dates and 2 cups of vegetable soup/w bone broth.

I used Atkins for successful weight loss 7 years ago, and the ketosis did not produce any different fecal smell as far as I can remember.
