Dr. Oz show Friday Oct. 28th
« on: October 26, 2011, 08:39:48 AM »
I saw a blurb for the Dr. Oz show on Friday Oct. 28th, and it said they would be discussing the "prehistoric diet".  I'm assuming that means the Paleo/Primal diet, thought it would be interesting to watch.  Wasn't sure where to post this.

While writing this, I looked at the Dr. Oz site and I'm not sure what they did - seems they locked three women in a zoo and fed them, not sure what they fed them!  Maybe or maybe not this is the segment advertised as the "prehistoric diet", who knows...

Apparently they only followed this experiment for 48hrs?  I don't know how much you could figure out after 2 days but they must have come up with something to broadcast it.

From what I'm seeing they were fed a caveman style diet, and what I'm enjoying (and I think others here will enjoy) is the premise seems to be that this "prehistoric diet" ends up being a solution to their problems, at least that's how I'm seeing it spun.

If this is true, it could mean some great positive publicity for caveman eating.

Well, after the way that ding-dong Dr. Oz marginalized Gary Taubes, dismissing the Good Calories, Bad Calories premise, and instead promoting his "low fat, whole grain" mantra, I won't hold my breath that he'll be kind and impartial to any kind of ancestral diet. Welcome to show biz.

The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.

Despite his stance, one thing to keep I mind about Dr. Oz is that he's in the entertainment business, he's looking to draw viewers in and appeal to the masses.  This seems like just that, Paleo is probably one of the bigger topics in the diet/nutrition world right now.

This is an excerpt I found at http://wenchwisdom.blogspot.com/2011/10/this-just-in-dr-oz-takes-diet.html

Quote
According to zoo director Dr. Jeremy Goodman, Dr. Oz had the women camp out at the White-Napes Cranes exhibit for 48 hours.

"It was an interesting experience," said Goodman. "There's something to be said about going to all natural foods and moving away from processed food — mother nature usually gets it right."

Definitely sounds positive.  That being said, I'll bet this "prehistoric diet" is low-fat.

From another site

Quote
Dr. Oz Prehistoric Diet; Zoo Experiment
Dr. Oz takes radical steps to help 3 women just like you – overweight, high blood pressure and out of control cholesterol. Cut off from all temptations, Dr. Oz locks them up for 48 hours – IN A ZOO! You won’t believe the results of this wild 48 hour experiment – could this diet save you?

If anything, it sounds like this experiment will be verysuccessful on the health side, and the negative will be the difficulty adhering to such a diet.

Well that was disappointing.  His "prehistoric" diet contained not one tiny iota of meat!!  Not even fish or poultry.  Not even eggs!!  It was raw fruit and vegetables and beans and nuts.  I think that's it.  The "expert" they talked to later went on and on about how chock full of protein dark greens are!  And beans and tofu, just brimming with more than enough protein!  And how we shouldn't eat fat in liquid form if we're trying to lose weight because it's so caloric, but instead cook with coconut milk or broth etc., and use nuts for our fat!  It was basically an advertisement for being a raw food, low fat vegan.  Like almost opposite of paleo/primal eating.  Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

It is a huge, huge disappointment.  Look at the new page on his website

http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/prehistoric-diet-plan

How does he think he can get away with calling this a "prehistoric" diet or relating it to cavemen in any way?  He's just trying to capitalize on the "caveman" buzz.  I don't know how he could possibly defend this in any kind of interview etc with an expert that supports real paleo/caveman style eating...

Wow, he probably could not have got it more wrong if he tried. That diet wouldn't be much better than the standard american diet...

This stuff gets my pulse rate up for about half a second, but then I remind myself that I don't really care about the diets of people I don't know. My life and health insurance should be cheaper though.

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
