Frustrated and keep getting in arguments.
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:02:33 AM »
I've had the same Argument with multiple people. Ever since I went Paleo I have felt better than I ever remember. All my digestive issues are gone.

I've had heated arguments with people that I need to put grains and some sorts of wheat back into my diet. I've also been told I need to go to the doctor and get tested. I tell them I don't see the point, I know something is bad for me why should I even tolerate it in my life. Their argument is what happens if I accidentally have something with wheat or grains in it and get sick or have a severe reaction due to the fact I haven't had anything with wheat or grains in it for quite some time.

Sorry for the rant, I feel like nobody see's why I gave up bread, wheat, grains, etc or understands why I would do such a "terrible" thing to myself.

Blue and Red pill takers never get along.  Welcome to the Matrix.

After a while you'll stop needing to prove yourself or seek affirmation from others because you'll know you're right.  But I agree it can be exhausting.

It's the same way with the rest of life, which is why I grow slightly more frustrated and anti-social over time as others don't agree with me.  Some examples:

- Buying vs. Renting:  falling housing market with increasing property taxes, but it's always the "best time to buy!"
- Sugar vs. Fat:  most believe fat is bad, sugar is ok.
- Sun vs. Sunscreen:  sun is terrible for you, slather yourself with chemicals if god-forbid you leave the house.
- TV vs. Living:  most kids are raised by television, most parents are addicted.

etc.
Other examples?

Having been a homeschooler for many years I've gotten very adept at avoiding discussions with people who just want to have a go at me, drag me down, "prove" that they're right and I'm wrong and I should be making the same choices they do, etc. My strategy is, 1. deflect tactfully, 2. deflect obviously, 3. tell them to stuff off, it's none of their business. I don't tell other people how to live their lives and I expect the same in return.

"Stand back, I'm going to try.....SCIENCE!"

If people start to argue, I usually hit them with the hard science.  Since I'm a chemistry major and biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, cell biology and evolutionary biology minor that usually shuts them up, even if they don't agree.

It's a little harder with members of the medical profession, who often are not terribly open to any ideas that go against the 'low fat, whole grains, red meat is BAD!!!' bullsh*t they've been force fed for years.  I just tell them I'm coeliac, allergic to casein and that 'gluten free' products give me IBS.  Once I even claimed I was on the ketogenic diet for epilepsy...another time I said that I had type 1 diabetes so had to avoid all sugar!  :o

Their argument is what happens if I accidentally have something with wheat or grains in it and get sick or have a severe reaction due to the fact I haven't had anything with wheat or grains in it for quite some time.

Surely you can counter this argument with 'if grains are so good for you and a natural human food, then why would this happen?'  Personally I never heard of anyone giving up chicken or broccoli or carrots for x years and then having a severe reaction from an errant floret...wonder why ;)
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

I've actually been pleasantly surprised by the number of dietitians who do NOT advocate the contemporary diet we are told is the healthiest and have recommended ketogenic diets to people with diabetes, IBS, etc. It's a positive sign that a minute number of professionals have actually researched for the truth in a land full of conflicting research papers. Eggs are GOOD! Eggs are BAD! Eggs might be OK! No wonder the papers are changing every week!
You got a dream, you've got to protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. You want something, go get it. Period.

interested by that Jean (homeschooling my son).

I'm having issues as we are staying with my parents they can't seem to grasp that "flour" is grains...I suffer alot of swelling in my stomach (retaining fluid) and I feel sooo much better when I don't have grains. I get so annoyed when people on the sly try to sneak things into my food - assuring me it has no potato or grains, only to find out that they have put gravox or something in.

Yep I know the answer, get in the kitchen myself...unfortunately at the moment my dad is home and he refuses to let me in to cook  :o counting down the days til he goes back to work!

How long have you been paleo for tom tom? And how long til you noticed a reduction in your digestive problems?

I started doing the Paleo thing a few months ago and failed 3 times before I finally go it right. Now My diet is pretty much omelets, meats, veggies. The 3rd time round I started going Wheat/Grain Free and worked my way to Paleo. I have never felt better, all my digestive issues growing up are now gone. I don't get headaches and feel like I have so much more energy. I haven't even started the gym yet and keep dropping the pounds, down to about 175lb which is the lowest in years. My blood pressure at the grocery store machine now is in the normal section instead of the pre hypertension it has been in for years of random checking in the pharmacy department. Sometimes it's rough. But I'm making due, found some locally made hunters sausage/jerky to keep in the desk at work and at home for snacks or to replace my lunch if I cannot make it out for an omelet. I also think back to when heartburn was a regular occurrence and I was frustrated but didn't think there was anything I could do about it. Now the last time I had it was when I had some toast, I made the connection and nobody believes me. So I quit trying to preach. When someone see's me and tells me I look healthy and lost weight, what's my secret, I usually offer to load out my copy of The Paleo Solution or my copy of The Wheat Belly. So far nobody else I know have done it. But maybe one day. Sorry to ramble on.

Watching that Jamie Oliver food revolution, I was surprised to find out that potato was counted as a vegetable with regards to school dietary requirements in the US.

I suppose if the only choices were animal, vegetable or mineral, it would be vegetable, but still it would not be 'a vegetable'.

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I think school lunch regulations are determined by politics more than actual nutrition.

No kidding.  I think I heard pizza is a vegetable now.
I used to work for a frozen food company and took orders over the phone.  There is a daycare food program run by some US government department and they put out certain guidelines about what food groups have to be included in daycare meals.  This lady I was talking to one day was straight p*ssed because they told her that the breading on the chicken strips no longer counted as a bread.  So now she had to provide some kind of bread with the meal.  I know, bread.  Horrifying, but at least they aren't trying to make people believe that gross breading on fake meat is healthy!  Good grief...
Hang in there!  Stand by your convictions, and eventually people will catch on.  My husband is finally figuring it out, and if he can get it, anyone can!

Thanks Folks! To update again, My girlfriend and I broke up and I know a whole lot had to deal with the fact I refused wheat and whole grains and she won't let go how bad that was for me to do. Her loss.

In more positive news a cousin of mine was told to go Gluten free by his doctor. I just sent him a copy of "The Wheat Belly" to start him off slowly and maybe eventually get him more Paleo after going Wheat Free it's not too hard to go Paleo. It was very cool to talk about a diet and have someone who didn't think I was crazy. I'm also excited to see how much it changes his life.

She sounds like a control freak. Why did she think she had any right to tell you what to eat? Yup, sounds like you're better off with somebody else.

I'm sorry that eating habits and diet got in the way of your relationship :( I agree with Jean that you're probably better off with somebody else, but still, it must have sucked. Onwards and upwards!
