Genetics and Diet
« on: November 17, 2011, 08:18:28 AM »
I had dinner with my dad last night.  Walked into his house, filled with smoke.  2 of his friends were all sitting in his house all were smoking!  I excused myself to the backyard.

These men are all in their 70's, smoke 3-4 packs per day, and eat crap!  Baked Potatoes loaded with sour cream, cheese, cheese bread, ranch dressing.... oh and fake bacon bits!

Oh, and drinking scotch, whiskey, beer... all of them were drunk at 4pm!

My question is, how do they live?   How much damage can you do to your body and not suffer?   My dad hasn't been to the doctor in probably 15 years!

My dad has friends, a married couple, that both have lung cancer, smoke 4ppd while on oxygen, and are still alive after being diagnosed over 2 years ago!!  Amazing!

Do I have good genes?

They are lucky more likely.  Lots of people live like that and live a long time.  Does not make it as good pattern to follow does it?

It's not necessarily about longevity, but about quality of life.

People who have to lug around oxygen don't exactly have a high quality of life. People who eat crap may live a long time, but it will catch up with them eventually in one way or another. If you took a person with those great genes, and they ate right and lived a healthy life, they would probably live even longer and would be healthier in their twilight years. In other words, their quality of life from beginning to end would probably be better. That's why people lay in hospital beds expressing regret over their lifestyle choices.
The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.

I think there's always a fair degree of luck in these things. All we can do is tip the odds in our favour.

Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

Many peoples bodies are quite good at coping with damaged organs, some people don't experience symptoms of real problems until the organ in question has lost 80-90% of its functionality.

Smoking is like chronic drug addiction.
So if it's not necessary, I don't somke.

Sometimes people are not easy to stop doing bad to their bodies.
