Looking to create real life paleo community
« on: January 24, 2012, 06:40:10 AM »
I am 22 years old, and until hearing about paleo roughly 6 months ago I had undergone ultrasounds, colonoscapys, and endless pointless meetings with doctors, some who told me I had either crohns or colitis, some who told me they could see no issue and didn't know how to explain my compounding health issues. Needless to say ever since eating Paleo my symptoms have basically vanished, and it was basically my silver bullet. I suspect that nearly all of my problems were linked to inflammation caused by eating wheat/ dairy products.

Like many other people with any type of similar story, and theres alot of awesome ones out there in regards to paleo, will never go back to eating as 99 percent of the developed world eats. As many of you will also know, this at times comes with some tiresome social implications -

family that constantly prodes at dinner saying "come on you mean you cant even eat one piece of ____?"

trying explain to a social network Ive built primarily around the activity of drinking beer why I cant slam beers anymore

a lack of paleo options in the fast food/ restaurant market in trying to lead a lifestyle which does not allow sufficient time for cooking, or calls for constant need to eat on the go ect, or business lunches ect, as well as a general lack of paleo consciousness in all limited menu food outfits such as university/ college or workplace cafeterias ect.

All of this being said, the benefits of Paleo far outweigh the inconveniences, and if you get creative you can basically find a paleo meal anywhere as long as you arnt afraid to commit the token paleo salute of ordering a sandwhich and throwing out the bread, or anything along these lines (ive done that one lots!). Regardless I see the issue of not eating standard food items setting causing one to be set apart as a social oddity or creating social inconveniences as the main reason this way of life doesn't spread as quickly as it should into everyones lifes. It simply bends to many of the conveniences and givens which we factor into our daily lives as a fact of live (bread and wheat in meals and beer on the wknds ect) for the average person to accept it as true or to want to give it a try. Any one who's ever picked up any type of personal improvement book (which I find most of the paleo community has) knows the importance others opinions make on guiding our decisions and how important surround ourselves with like minded people is to attaining our goals. This being said I think one of the most important things in pushing paleo forward and making it more livable for other people who have tryed it and seen the results, is to get some of its believers together in real life in a more formal fashion. I personally would love to meet more people who are into paleo for conversation sake alone, let alone how wicked it would be if I was surround by people who embraced it.

I would love to meet anyone living near my area who is interested in paleo to discuss stories, and ways to start to turn the online community into a real community and to meet some people who share an interest in this stuff, with the potential future stemming the community into a restaurant or lifestyle promotion/ support group similar to herbal magic or anything of the sort.

This idea may sound absurd the way ive put it, but i seriously see much more potential in paleo then its current state, and think that is has much room to grow, just like how a health based mentality took subway to leading franchise over the past decade. and am very interested in meeting any paleo believers who also have an interest in business, or any skills in web design, marketing, ect and are interested in discussing doing more to get the word about this stuff. Anyone who shares any similar ideas at all or has had thoughts about making a business and lifestyle out of paleo id love to hear from you, as these ideas are just in there infancy for me and id love to have someone to discuss with. where ever your from id love to hear from you. Most importantly id like more people to learn about this stuff because it changes lifes!!! and I dont think the way ive been going about it has been good enough (recommonding the book to people who seem curious is about the extent of it)! Not to mention id love to lead a life of work thats dedicated to something I beleive in, as apposed to the money driven grind I currently pursure which leaves me with little to no gratification in my life! I look foward to hearing any voices and to meeting some new people on here!

We have a real life Paleo/primal group here is San Diego.  It got started on Meetup.com.  You may try looking there or some other social meet n greet sites.  Good Luck and glad it has worked so well for you.
No expectations, no disappointments!

And I'm having trouble figuring out which Ontario! Canada or one of the many places in the US with such name.

Anyway, I agree. It would be great to actually meet and be friends with those who are on the same wave length here.

I am in SW Oregon. Anyone else?

I just looked at Meetup.com. I notice one group: The San Diego Shyness & Social Anxiety Meetup Group. But when you look to the right of the group listing it says: "Meetup details are available only to members."  So they are too shy to let you know where they meet. But what if you are too shy to ask?  (nothing paleo, just and observation).

You laugh, but I am exactly that kind of shy person. I've been to parties by myself where I didn't talk to a single person before I gave up and left. A group like that would be fun. I'm usually saved by my wife, who is far more gregarious .

I'm studying (in school) in Waterloo, but I live in Toronto :) I've met up with another paleo there a few times - let us know when you're in town!
