Moving out
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:50:12 PM »
Anyone have any good tips for knowing when someone is ready to ''leave the nest'' and move out on their own. What things are crucial to know when you live on your own that you would normally overlook? Any advice, tips, etc?

Edit: moving out from home 1st time

Moving out from where? Parents house, going without a roommate or broke up with significant other?

In either case you can sit around all day in your underwear without getting dressed and munch on bon-bons without getting nagged by anyone.  ;D

Pay rent before you do/buy anything else.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

It will cost you more to live than you ever imagined. It sounds obvious but this has applied to nearly everybody I know. When you're living at home you are protected from so many expenses while your parents pay out and out and out, even if you've been paying a substantial amount of board to them.

Avoid using credit cards, it's too easy for the debt to get away on you. Every payday, sit down and go through your bills and stuff, and work out everything that needs to be paid between now and next payday, and pay it or put aside enough money to pay it. Then work out how much you need for essentials like food and transport, and put that aside. Then, if possible, put some in a savings account and try to build that up to the equivalent of three months salary to cover emergencies like being between jobs for a short period. What's left can be spent, and it will never be as much as you thought it would be.

If you can manage your money successfully, everything else will fall into place nicely. No debt + money in the bank = security + freedom.

Set up direct debits/standing orders for all your bills (rent, water, gas, electric, phone, internet, gas, gym, tax, travel) and have them come out of your account the day after you get paid.  Once that's all taken care of, then remove the $X cash that you want spend on food.  Only then can you look at what's left and spend it how you wish.

Learn to shop and cook for one.  Fridges don't fill themselves, out of date foods do not walk to the bin.

Lean how to change lightbulbs/unblock toilets/other household emergencies

When you move in, arrange all your utilities (water, gas, internet etc) as soon as possible...admin blitz on day one.  Similar with dentist/doctor.

Keep a filing cabinet or folder with separate sections for various bills and contracts

Keep receipts and warranties for household items.  I just had my shower replaced and the fact that the previous owners of my house didn't leave any information about the model of shower caused a fair amount of hassle

The cleanliness of your house will now depend on your own personal standards.  I'm generalising here, but I've lived with at least 20 people to date and in my experience most male eyes simply do not see dirt the way that female eyes do!  W.r.t. cleaning, prevention is better than cure.  Get some good quality microfibre cleaning clothes.  When you clean, make sure you are very thorough - don't just do essential surfaces but also do walls, cupboards, handles, skirting boards, mirrors etc.  This way filth doesn't build up ;)

How you find the transition depends on how much your parents do for you at home.  Mine were rather hands off, and I did my own washing from 14 or so, and they didn't drive me around in the car, either.  They also gave me a monthly allowance at the age of 13 to cover everything from school uniform to shoes to cinema trips to lunches with friends - if I spent it all, then I didn't get bailed out.  Subsequently, I found moving out of home at 17 pretty easy, have never used a credit card, and have never been in debt.  I was pretty messy until about 22/23 though!

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

Make sure your income is enough to cover rent, food, utilities, and transportation, with some margin, before moving out.

Alternatively, if you have male eyes, just move to a new place when the filth builds up to the point where you can see it ... for most men, that's once every decade or two.
