Paleo is making me sad :(
« on: December 05, 2011, 03:44:12 PM »
As great as I feel eating Paleo, sometimes it makes me feel sad and alone. It's depressing to watch all the people I love get sick and die in front of my eyes, while I feel better and better every day. No one wants my help (of course), and I'm just starting to feel like everyone thinks I'm an freakazoid gluten-hating bacon eating lady or something. I want to spend my life with people who are healthy, happy, and like-minded. I don't think I have a single health minded friend, and no one to talk to about my diet. I want to scream from the rooftops about how great I feel now, and being around people who are tired, sick, and unenthused is making me depressed. Does anyone else ever feel like this? Wanna be my Paleo friend? :P

I think most of us feel that way for the first few months at least.  Talking to people here helps, and after a while most of us get to the point where we realize we can't make people do things, even if those things are good for them.

I'll cheer you up.

I'm sadder than you!

I'm even more of a freakazoid... there are even less of us RAW paleo dieters than you cooked paleo dieters.

1 of my kids is a raw paleo dieter (to fix his illness)
2 of my kids are on cooked paleo diet (they don't mind cooked paleo diet... because the alternative I threaten them is raw bloody meat paleo diet... so they're happy with cooked)

So cheer up.

I'm your paleo friend.  I think that is why I hang around in the paleo diet forums. http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com (raw) and http://www.cavemanforum.com (cooked).  There are so few of us paleo dieters.  But collectively worldwide, I think cooked paleo diet is catching on.

time to make new friends....new paleo/primal friends!

I converted one of my friends.  I found a primal at my gym (the 5fingers were a give away).  I've semi-converted Mr CCG.  Me and a couple of others are trying to start a London Paleo group.  Maybe there is a group in your city?  A crossfit or Movnat?

I think your desire for like minded friends is great- strength in numbers!  I'm sure the sadness you feel is that dark cloud lifted as you eat better and better.

I hear you. When I see my dumpy friends dragging around lethargically it's hard not to say anything. But I avoid saying anything - I think most people are more receptive if they come to it in their own time. In fact, as I lost 30kg over nine months and looked so much healthier, people have been asking me how I did it with great interest. I didn't try to convert my family, they got on board voluntarily after a few months as they saw how much good it was doing me and decided to give it a try. Two of my friends are now paleo, and a few others are flirting with the idea. Our doctor is taking great interest. I think the best thing you can do is try to live a good example so people can't fail but see the difference it makes.

If spending time with people who are sick, tired and unenthused is making you depressed, it might help to find some new friends! You don't have to dump the old ones, but expanding your circle of friends and spending time with people who are more positive has got to be good for you. Your new friends don't necessarily need to be paleo, just reasonably healthy people who enjoy life. You might be able to meet new friends by joining a club or taking up a hobby you've wanted to try? Maybe something creative, or joining a hiking group? Conservation volunteering? A community choir? Social dance classes? Sorry, I don't know you so I can't make any specific suggestions, but hopefully if you reflect on it something will come to you. If you could try a few new things that would be even better, then you could prune back to what you're finding most enjoyable and worthwhile.

And yes, online friends help too!

It frustrates me when I see people who could change their lives to make the pain go away by changing their diet. People keep getting on my case that Paleo is bad for me, there are too many fats, not enough grains and wheat. It's frustrating me.
