Question for the cave women
« on: June 18, 2015, 12:33:53 PM »
Hello, ladies. I was wondering how many of you find yourselves cravings "junk"food when you are menstruating. I mostly want carbohydrate rich stuff like chips and pretzels and fritos, salty and crunchy. But I really want to avoid these ravings as much as can as well. So if you do get cravings, can you offer a little advise on how to calm them?

How long have you been paleo for?
After a few months, those cravings will go away (at least for me they did). What I do, is have a peice of dark chocolate when I'm on my period. Savor it, don't just pop it in your mouth and eat it.
If your craving something crunchy, dig into a bag of baby carrots. You'll get full eventually, and so long as you don't eat bags of them a week, I can't see any harm in feasting on carrots for crunchy cravings.

I just thought of this based on a dish we have at work, and I have not tried this (but I will at some point), but you could try sprinkling some mustard powder on the carrots and mixing it up in a bowl, to give it that salty flavor your looking for. At my work, they make a carrot mustard side dish with cashews, but they cook the carrots. Couldn't hurt to try it raw so they're still crunchy. If I have the time, I'll try the mustard carrots and report back on the idea.

Hope that helped a little bit.

Longer summer nights can cause carbohydrate cravings as well.
Also, and this is HUGE, but every year gets worse and worse for screen time post-sunset which prevents normal processes and hormone release to help people sleep better.
It also triggers carbohydrate cravings.

This is the "ice cream in bed watching TV / iPad" syndrome at 9 or 10pm thing.
We should be off screens by then...

I also suggest tools like f.lux (https://justgetflux.com/) or similar for your devices.
I personally purchased these orange glasses ( Uvex S1933X Skyper Safety Eyewear, Black Frame, SCT-Orange UV Extreme Anti-Fog Lens ) to block blue light:  http://www.amazon.com/Uvex-S1933X-Eyewear-SCT-Orange-Anti-Fog/dp/B000USRG90

I struggle with cravings a lot - especially sugar cravings. It's hard to get off sugar completely, because I find, even if I have a little bit of fruit, the cravings come back.

My craving cheats are:

- have a big cup of herbal tea
- distract myself: put the TV on, pick up a book/magazine
- go out for a walk
- work out!

Hope that helps!

*bump* anyone else wrecking their diet every month with PMS cravings?

I started paleo this month and because of the changes in my diet/ exercise regime my cycle was sooo delayed. I felt like I needed the carbs and ate unhealthily for a couple of days. Don't know if it helped, but at least I got my period! I was going mental.

Any suggestions to avoid PMS cravings next month would be most welcome! It really is my downfall :(

I sometimes struggle with sugar cravings. During those times I usually have a sweet to sate the feeling. The sweets that I have will either be natural sugars like fruit or raw honey sweetened green tea. In essence, I don't deprive myself when I feel that way. It feels much harder when you're fighting against the cravings, but you have to make really smart choices and avoid impulse foods.

In short, you really gotta find out what works for you and stick with it. Once you're paleo for a while (at least for me) the cravings lessened. As such, I didn't struggle quite as badly.

Good Luck,

Gray
