Thoughts on Cholesterol Levels
« on: November 21, 2011, 02:38:45 AM »
I have a friend who has had his cholesterol as low as 115 (He is over 50).  He has been on Lipator (I think it is called?)  More recently, his numbers have looked like this (I think he came off the Lipator several months ago):

October 2010
HDL = 42
LDL =80
Triglycerides = 74
Total= 137

August 2011
HDL=34
LDL=106
Triglycerides = 178
Total = 176

He asked me my levels, which I shared:

Oct 2011
HDL = 97
LDL = 125
TGL = 34
Chol = 229

Naturally, he went on to tell me that I need to get my  cholesterol under 200.  I argued that he is actually at a greater risk than I am due to his ratio of high Triglycerides to low HDL, while I am just the opposite with high HDL to low Triglycerides.

When you have been taught something by society all of your life, it is hard to let that belief go.  I shared with him the link to Dr. Joseph Mercola: The Cholesterol Myth That Could Be Harming Your Health.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/the-cholesterol-myth-that_b_676817.html

I would like to hear others' opinions regarding cholesterol levels/risk factors and recommended reading/websites if you know of a good reputable source.  And if you have knowledge of what healthy cholesterol ratios should be, please share.

Maria,

Looking at your numbers just from the standard medical advice point of view:
The biggest concern is LDL. It used to be that LDL should be below 130. The new advice that came out in 2001 was to keep LDL below 100. However, most GP and Family Practice doctors are still going with the 130. My doctor was happy with my LDL being 118 last year.

Although most doctors, including GP and Family doctors want total cholesterol below 200, often they take into consideration anyone whose HDL is well above 60 and total cholesterol below 240 to still be 'safe'.

As for your numbers. If you were to take 500mg of Niacin a day. Niacin from Nitronic Acid, the real stuff and none of the so called "no flush' niacin brands, your HDL would go even higher and your LDL and total cholesterol would come down.
The brand sold at Wal Mart and Costco called SLO Niacin is the real stuff and it is actually better than the more expensive brands sold at health food stores.

Exercise also raises HDL and that is probably why your HDL is so high. I think you bike more than I drive. :D

Your cholesterol level of 229 is great and is what is expected of a healthy person.

I don't give a hoot about my personal cholesterol levels and I never ever bother to get them measured.
I'm on Raw Paleo diet but I have kids to feed on cooked paleo diet.

Maria, your lipid levels are excellent and your position in your discussion with your friend is exactly correct.  If you want more evidence to show to your friend, here's a chart showing that the ideal total cholesterol levels to minimize all cause mortality are between 200 and 240:

Thank you everyone for the responses and websites!

Although my friend is brainwashed by standard thinking (as most Americans are), he is also very open minded and interested to learn alternative views.  I know he will appreciate the information.  I was mostly worried about him taking cholesterol lowing meds, but glad to know he is off them now.

Low cholesterol indicates there might be a problem as much as high cholesterol does. And his cholesterol isn't high. His Dr has no business putting him on cholesterol-messing drugs.

Your levels look fantastic!

I just found out that my friend had his numbers rechecked.  His total was 176, LDL was 109 and triglycerides were 78.

His doctor wants to put him back on Lipitor!!!!

He said his doctor wants his LDL <100.

I passed him the website info and the niacin tip (which I know works because I've used it myself).  I urged him NOT to go back on the Lipitor, but he will have to decide for himself whether to trust his doctor or not.

Additionally, a female friend just told me that her doctor told her to start drinking to raise her HDL!  Her HDL was 25 and LDL was 130 (she did not know triglycerides).  I did not know that alcohol raises HDL so I looked it up.

When I was vegetarian many years ago my HDL was about 32. The doctor was concerned about that even though my total cholesterol was 160.  My latest test back in August my LDL was 98 (lower than when I was a vegetarian). The year before when my LDL was 118 the doctor wasn't concerned.  Most doctors aren't going with the new LDL numbers even though they are 10 years old.

For those who wonder why I am concerned at all about my cholesterol numbers: When you are no longer on an employer's group health insurance and you pay for your own the difference between total cholesterol of 199 and 229 can be $100.00 a month.

How come life insurance companies have figured out to look at triglycerides and apolipoprotein B but health insurance companies have not?

One reason is there is more competition among life insurance companies than health insurance companies.  Life insurance companies have more incentive to find ways to keep premiums lower.
