Your oddest side effects on paleo?
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:20:19 PM »
Besides better health, what are some weird side effects you've noticed? Things you wouldn't expect...-I can't chew gum for more than 5 minutes. Used to chew for hours on end.- On low-carb and paleo, my breasts get bigger. I lost 50 lbs a few years ago and they stayed the same size. Hormones, maybe?- I'm hot all the time. - My hair looks greasy in the morning. It's gross.

One beer will make me feel drunk.  A non paleo meal will put me to sleep.

One glass of wine & I'm out, too. I'm a cheap date.

My fingernails grow faster.  Clipping them more often is about the only downside to paleo for me.

My hair looks greasy in the morning. It's gross.

Shampoos and conditioners with sulfates and silicones in them used to make my hair do that...haven't noticed much of a change since switching to paleo, but I stopped using those products a couple years ago.

I get very buzzed off of one drink.  I'm toning up without losing weight, and without much working out.  My skin heals more quickly (I may be turning into Wolverine).  My hair and nails grow faster.  I used to be cold constantly - now I'm much warmer.  I was hot a lot when I first started eating more fat, but that feeling went away after a few weeks.

A neolithic meal will knock me out, too, but that was one reason I switched to paleo in the first place.

I require much less sleep.  I used to need 10 hours.  Now I wake up ready for action after 7-8.  :D

So far I have only lost inches from my waist (26" now), everything else is the same.

I take lunch at 2.30.  Old breakfast - bowl wholegrain cereal w milk, 1 egg.  Hungry by 12, ended up eating 2 granola bars.  New breakfast - berries w coconut milk, 1 egg, maybe a couple of nuts, or prawns, or a bit of avocado.  Not hungry til 2

pretty common side effects actually!  Perhaps I have not been on it long enough to notice the odd ones

I think this is related to metabolism. On some other blog (180 degree health?) there was a discussion about how low carb diets can over-stress the adrenals, lowering your metabolism to compensate... the guy from Carnivore Health Blog (meat only) actually lost like 1.5 degrees on his resting body temp, and decided to start eating carbs again...

How low before the adrenal stress happens?

That doesn't explain the people who feel warmer on paleo.

I think it does have to do with metabolism, but it's not primarily a low carb thing.  Before paleo, there was one year when I was eating 1200-1300 kcal/day - just because I didn't have anything around the house - and I felt cold all the time.  When I started eating more the next year, the problem stopped.  I still felt cold when I visited my in laws, who keep their thermostat at 62F or so, but they didn't because they ate a lot more than I did.

I'm sure the same thing happens on paleo.  You eat more, your body burns more, you stay warmer.  Eat less, your body burns less, you get cold more easily.

The adrenal stress doesn't make sense to me since many people who have adrenal fatigue get better when they eat a diet similar to paleo.
