Allow me to stick a stick in the hornets nest............. ::) :o

Maybe it is time to start him on more "solid" foods.  Yes, more breast milk will be beneficial as well, but from the photo, he appears to be a big kid, maybe there is just not enough calories in his mom's milk no matter what she does.

We're not really worried.  His body is proportionally fine in terms of weight for height; he's just a couple months behind in both.  The likely cause is the skipped midnight pump resulting in less overall milk production.  We're addressing that.

We've already introduced solids and are continuing to try to increase his intake.  As with Margaret, I'm sure that will get easier when he has teeth.

The interesting thing is that his brain size isn't behind even though his body size is.  It seems that paleo breast milk increases the brain size to body size ratio.

Teeth always help a caveman.  He will be chewing on a rib or steak bone before you know it.  It has always been bad for old cavemen to loose their teeth but great for little cavemen to gain theirs.  I am proud of your little caveman you will raise him well.

It sounds like the midnight pumping will probably do the trick.

The brain development is fascinating!  Diet makes such a huge difference in nursing dogs and puppies.  Raw fed pups nursed on raw fed dams have slow growth but "hit the milestones" the same as other puppies, and end up with normal adult height.  Raw dog diets are much lower in carbohydrates than pretty much all commercial dog foods.  I wonder if something similar is happening with Duncan's growth?  Obviously, dogs and humans are totally different species, so a puppy-baby comparison should be taken with a grain of salt. :)

Does Duncan usually sleep through the night?  The other thing to help him catch up might be to let him nurse on demand whenever Mom is home, including at night, if you're not doing that already.  Cavemen/HG babies would have been sleeping near their mothers, so nighttime nursing was likely the norm.  I don't know what age those little guys would have stopped nursing at night...Duncan may be past that age, anyway.

Duncan does nurse on demand when mom is home, and in no way sleeps through the night.  Aside from the lack of the midnight pump, though, the main difference between Duncan and Margaret is that Duncan never really learned as solid a latch, and mom tries to nurse him while continuing to sleep at night rather than getting up, so he ends up sipping instead of really sucking.  That said, he seems to be nursing more insistently since the midnight pump started, which will hopefully stimulate production.

Margaret only recently started sleeping through the night, so in the paleolithic I think she wouldn't have stopped nighttime nursing until age 2 or so.

Very interesting information on puppies.  If I were sure Duncan could "catch up later", I wouldn't be worrying.  That would take more than just information on dogs, of course.

What were his 6 month stats Warren?

Our situation is somewhat similar, but I'm not too worried.  He's playing with/eating solids now a couple times a day and still breastfeeds like a champ.

Our numbers from the other day's 6 month checkup:

Height - 51st percentile
Weight - 8th percentile
Head - 26th percentile

The doctor didn't seem very concerned and said that breastfed babies' growth slows during the second part of year 1.

Oh, and his mom and I are both tall, thin, and intelligent, so really that probably explains everything :)

Six month stats, which were taken closer to 7 months were about 15%ile weight, 35%ile height, 45%ile head, which didn't alarm the doctor or us.  Nine month stats were what worried us - 5%ile weight, 15%ile height, 65%ile head.  I got a copy of the WHO chart for breast fed boys, and he had dropped to 10%ile on that, too, so it wasn't just breast feeding.

He was recently at the doctor's for a bit of a cough at 10 months - nothing serious, it turned out - and he at least wasn't dropping on the weight %ile any more, so the extra pump and solids seem to be doing some good.  Hopefully we see a recovery at some point.

What we saw on Margaret looked more like your son, with the weight low but the height fine.  I think that's just because of nonpaleo bottle fed babies being a little fat.

Another idea, have you measured milk production? I heard or read somewhere that because these days a lot more women are giving birth at older ages than in paleo times, that milk production may sometimes be inadequate and that's what justifies breast milk needing help from other sources, such as formula, etc.

I think the milk production was okay after we reinstituted the midnight pump, as he was no longer using up all the pumped milk during the day.  More recently, when the whole family was sick, we did have a milk production problem for a couple of days, but we seem to be recovering from that.

I think the biggest problem is that we don't stuff enough solids into him.  He doesn't really have enough teeth to chew yet, so we need to get better on stuffing apple sauce and pureed meats into him.
