What to do when your child hates meat?

How the heck can I do a Primal diet for my children if one of them hates meat  =(

Do your best. That's all you can do with kids. Try different recipes, different kinds of meat, eggs. If they really really won't touch meat, at least get them to drink milk or eat cheese or yogurt. They still need to get all their essential amino acids.

burgers? let the kids make their own? Generally it's best not to let it get to you - just make sure they can see you really enjoying your food.

Not wanting to eat meat is just a passing phase.

A body bereft of protein and fat will get it "elsewhere", however corrupt and degenerative that elsewhere is such as:

- soya
- beans
- nuts
- cooking oil

If you remove all the elsewhere stuff, your child will want meat / fish / shellfish / eggs.

I have a friend whose kids wouldn't eat most meat, but they would eat pate. It was a texture thing for them. Liver pate will give them lots of iron, zinc and B vitamins if they'll eat it, and it's easy to make it yourself so it doesn't have any crap in it. You can serve it spread on celery sticks and suchlike.

Will they eat fish? Fish is good too, but you'll need to find other ways to get enough fat into them, eg coconut and avocado, as fish is too lean without extra fat.

I also agree with GS, cut the non-paleo foods anyway and keep offering small quantities of meat, and almost certainly they will eventually want it. Many kids need to taste something 10 or 20 times before they decide it's OK to eat it.

How old are the children?

It might be a good idea to give children who are 3 years old or less some form of dairy if they aren't breast feeding.  There's a link somewhere in this forum to a diary mixture that approximates the nutrient ratios of breast milk.

Children also can't chew as easily as adults can.  For that reason, hamburger may be preferred to steaks or roasts.

Other things that can be tried:  mat that isn't strictly paleo like ham or bacon; other paleo sources of protein like eggs.  Fish of course is as good as meat.

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

Just do what my parents did - if we didn't like what was for dinner, we got hungry.  Hunger makes anyone less fussy (except paleo adults, perhaps ;))

my son wasn't a huge meat eater until he was older, he only really became interested after I finished breastfeeding him ( about 5 and half). He seemed to prefer white meats like chicken and fish when he first started eating meat, and occassionally sausage, I didn't worry about it too much but each meal time would offer a little on his place. It seemed to be a texture thing for a bit ( anything too chewy was rejected), but just like the *odd* veggies I persist by asking him just to have a mouthful or a "taste".  Persistance is the key :)
