Okay, maybe my title is a bit dramatic, but my partner and I are getting a lot of grief from our families. We eat sausages or bacon, along with eggs, and fruit every morning. We are very happy with it and really enjoy it. It is nitrite free and we buy it all the meat on special order from a local farm to ensure no non-paleo ingredients get added. It is not cheap, but it makes us happy.

On the other hand... everyone who sees us eat tells us that we are going to die at 40 from a heart attack from eating so much fatty meat for breakfast (there are some family members that freak out about 2 eggs per morning every day too). I have been doing paleo for 2 years now and he has been doing it for 6 months.

Are we making ourselves sick or is everyone overreacting?

It is Maples time here in Canada! I was wondering how Paleo Maple is. I am not talking about the artificial flavoring, I am speaking of the fresh made, boiled sap, nothing more kind. I mean, it is pretty much tree juice... is it paleo?

Breakfast- Beef slices, 1 slice of gouda cheese, 1 apple, coffee with two tablespoons of milk
Lunch- Salad with pork loin cubes, lemon, beet, carrot
Snack- Pear
Dinner- Tomato purée, spinach, 2 boiled eggs
Snack- Strawberries

Hello!

While in university I lived the Paleo lifestyle. I have not succeeded in continuing to live a healthy lifestyle since then. I am working in business and travel around half the time (often to Asian countries), so I have had trouble eating healthy and getting adequate exercise. My breakfasts and lunches are catered Monday- Friday, which further complicates things. Please do not get me wrong, I am not trying to excuse my behaviour. I have made the wrong choices over the last year, and my body has suffered. I have gained 40lbs, but I miss the other side effects of Paleo more (more energy, easier to concentrate, sleep less).

Right to the good stuff! The reason that I am writing this post is that I believe that there must be other people in similar life situations as me. I also live in Germany, which means there are different relationships to food here (a meal is rarely without a roll on the side). I would really like to help people who may have similar lifestyles (either location-wise or job-wise). Of course, a little advice along the way would be great!

I'll put it all on the table:

Height: 5'2
Weight: 160
BMI: 30.2 (which makes me obese...)
Waist: 32 inches
Bust: 42 inches
Hips: 42 inches

-I live in a big city (3.5 million people)
-I'm 21 years old
-I used to be a fitness model
-I like to do running (gyms in the American sense are not common here, so I do not have gym membership)
-I don't know any hunters, farmers, etc
-My mom is a marathoner with the cholesterol of an obese man- I'm trying to avoid this future
-Cheese and milk is my weakness (some advice on this would be great, as I find it VERY hard to stay on a paleo lifestyle when abstaining from them. I only eat them in limited amounts, but I'm worried that this might hinder my process)

Different roommate actually! I have 3... one is vegan, one eats only junk food, and one eats 'well-rounded'- he gave them to me.

When you say they keep in the fridge for a week, do you mean raw or cooked?

Thanks for the info, I thought they couldn't be refrozen! Now I know!

My roommate gave me 3 defrosted raw steaks... what should I do with them? I'll be able to eat 1.5 or so today (they are huge, but I do love steaks!). Any ideas on what to cook wit the rest? I don't think you are supposed to refreeze meat....

I love love love blue steaks. I actually love all raw fish as well (there is an 'all you can eat' sushi buffet near my parents house and every time I visit I am so happy! (I'm talking the straight up raw fish kind, no rice or sauces involved). The problem is that I don't feel educated enough to safely eat raw meat outside of restaurant settings. I wish I lived somewhere where this was more normal :(

Tough love time:

If you have a tendency to listen to rationalisations like "only 1 won't hurt" or "I've already messed up so...", take some time to write down the ones you use and write replies to them. Put these in a card in your wallet, on your desktop etc so that you have some replies next time the voices urge you to undermine yourself. Practice at this will make it easier and easier.

Now forgive yourself and learn from it - failure is important for learning stuff.

Give yourself lots of credit for 'fessing up and working out where you went wrong and for trying again. You didn't fail, you learnt something about yourself.

I am so proud and impressed by you! I'm less then half your age and weight, but I am also embracing a healthy new lifestyle!

To make the changes you as a middle aged man inspires me. I wish my parents would do the same. I happy that you will be around much longer due to your new lifestyle!

Ate LOTS of almonds, like 10 handfuls, SO glad i had them on hand...

Ate 4 cans of pears, about 1/4 of a watermelon...2 bags of mango, and a serving of my supplement.

I had some serious cravings for sweets, it was TORTURE going into the supermarket and seeing all the unhealthy foods and knowing I WILL NOT BE EATING THEM! Then i thought back to what I was told yesterday "Think i can eat this but I CHOOSE not to"

I bought some frozen pepper mix (red, green, and yellow), and frozen raspberries... their thawing in my fridge ready for consumption tomorrow, then at work...nothing but veggies and meat...(oh what a treat)  8)

I hope you're just doing this for health reasons, rather then weight loss ones. That's a lot of nuts and fruit otherwise :P

Yes, I feel sorry for the poor fishes that now must eat the rotting flesh if that piece is shit!

As if our oceans weren't polluted enough already. I just started eating fish and am worried enough about getting too much mercury. Now I have to worry about eating terrorist.
