Diet and nutrition / I'm failing, I need help
« on: September 27, 2015, 03:41:11 AM »
A little bit of depression is starting to set in with me and weight loss. I don't have the time I use to, I work full time, take 2 classes and have gotten back into the dating seen. My life is packed now and the extra work it was taking to meal prep and find new recipes is gone.

I use to have 5 hours a day put aside to play video games several days a week. I'd play 25 hours a week, hit the gym twice a week, do meal prep, have 2-3 days I could sleep 10 hours. Now I have no days I can sleep 10 hours unless I work my schedule to sleep 6 days a week, which is rough.

I've hit that paleo wall that nutritionists criticize paleo for being to hard to follow. And I'm gaining weight. I woke up this morning 10 pounds heavier than my normal. I think I need a support network or something. I've also reached out for help in another area of my life and was basically told by that community I was a part of to either suck it up or complain to somebody who cares, which didn't help. I need a community of people who aren't gonna kick me when I'm down, because that strategy just didn't work on me.

Don't know what to do.

Diet and nutrition / Looking for recipe, low carb tacos, something......
« on: February 18, 2015, 10:52:20 PM »
Was hoping to find some lower carb taco type recipes. I like the worst of all things "Mexican Pizza" from Taco Bell. Trying to find a way to mimic that, but without the amount 48g of carbs per serving. Only 7 of which is dietary fiber, 3 sugar, and I assume 38g of starch. Generally what it takes to fill me up is:

2 Mexican Pizzas, and  a fiery taco. Total calories 1,270. Carbs: sugar 7, starch 80

Any ideas?

Diet and nutrition / Organic Dark Chocolate chews<--- Do they exist?
« on: December 02, 2014, 12:10:03 PM »
I like to eat dark chocolate every day. I eat 2-3 squares(3 grams carbs per square) a day. I was wondering if there is a mixture out there that is a bit like a caramel chew a mixed with dark chocolate. But all organic, not a tone of sugar.

Diet and nutrition / What happened to the carbs?(labels)
« on: October 31, 2014, 10:49:35 PM »
I was trying to see how many carbs are in Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza. IT turns out there are 48g......... 7 dietary fiber and 3 sugar.

So what else makes up the carbs? 3g of sugar sounds fairly nice if my body isn't getting hit with a massive amount of sugar. I'm thinking it is the sauce that has the sugar, and the meager veggies that have the fiber....... What about the other 38g? Flour?

Diet and nutrition / Whats wrong with this article?
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:43:28 PM »
I was reading this and all I could do was think it was complete garbage. The author did not cite anything, he made broad statements attacking the carbs=higher insulin statements with no proof or link to data to prove it, and also made broad claims that insulin does not cause weight gain again not citing or pointing to any source whatsoever to prove his statements. Am I missing anything? Is this just a bogus slam piece?

Diet and nutrition / Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar everyday?
« on: July 26, 2014, 02:51:34 AM »
I have been drinking half a Tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar with water twice a day lately and I like it. All research says it's healthy, but that's just my GooglFu talking. Anyone disagree? There was one site that mention possible prostate cancer, but I chalk most cancers to industrialization, carbohydrates, and unfiltered water.

Diet and nutrition / How did cave men get salt?
« on: July 20, 2014, 05:39:42 PM »
My buddy and I were moving and it was 100+ degrees. Over 4 hours he drank 6 bottles of water and I told him that he should drink some sea salt and water for the hydration. He said that's all BS, and cave men never had lots of salt for rehydration so he won't do it either.

Is he wise in this? Did cave men know to up there salt intake, and how did they do it?

Miscellaneous / Micro Fasting?
« on: July 16, 2014, 11:21:05 AM »
on a paleo diet, does micro fasting work and does it give you sustainable body fat loss? I do a full body weight lifting work out 2x a week, and have a medium physical job 3x a week, and I get about 30 minute hike or longer 1x a week. Everyday I eat 150g fat, 100g protein, 40-20g carbs(fruit+whole milk yogurt).

I don't want to bounce up and down needing to rely on the fasting. I had my body fat checked with a full body scanner 19 weeks ago, read 19.7% body fat. Went from 175 to 163 was my lowest. Though 5-6 months ago I was 178. Now with all the building of muscle and the weight loss I am looking fairly good in the mirror, but I want the six pack, lol. If I had to guess, I'm at 15-16% body fat.

The other issue is whether it's healthy or not. I have a GOOD doctor who knows what's up and he loves my blood work. My blood pressure is 110/70 with 60-70 heart rate. I don't really want to shorten my life trying to look better naked, lol.

Any tips?

Diet and nutrition / Do I subtract Dietary Fiber?

In terms of raising insulin levels and counting toward total daily carbs, do I subtract the Dietary Fiber from the fruits and vegetables I eat?

Introductions / Hi all
« on: July 01, 2014, 07:13:04 PM »
Hi all, I started on a path to better health several months ago by running across a few articles that discussed the benefits of cholesterol. I had written it off several times as hokum. Then I started watching TedTalks and reading books on the subject, it convinced me to change. I got a new doctor that specializes in real health and is very supportive of the statements in Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and a few other related books. I had some blood work done after a couple months of a low-carb high-fat diet and my doctor was very happy with it all. I have also lost about 14 pounds feeling better than ever.

I found this place because the largest fitness forum in the world would just troll me when I talked about these concepts, so asking a question or trying to spark dialogue was impossible. Hopefully I will have better luck here.

Look forward to getting to know you all  8)
