I realize this is an old topic, but ...

There's no reason almond butter should have palm oil in it.  Almonds have their own oil!  Sounds like a way to cut the product with a cheap filler.  Or to get the consistency to be more like peanut butter or nutella - with pure almond butter the oil tends to seperate and float at the top of the jar, with a thick dry sludge settling on the bottom sometimes, probably from being on the shelf for awhile.  Anyway, I get organic almond butter made from just almonds, no brand name, just the store brand at either wholefoods or shoprite (a local supermarket chain here).  Sometimes with salt, depending what's on the shelf.  Wholefoods actually has a grinder that you can fill from a bulk bin whatever type of raw or roasted nut you want, hold a container underneath and out comes nut butter. 

At any rate, it's more expensive than peanut butter, which I'm allergic to and I've heard isn't really paleo anyway, but pure almond butter is pretty dense with fat and other nutrition, so 2 tablespoons or so added to a smoothy or something is plenty, so an $8 jar lasts awhile.  For me anyway.

Actually I'm doing a lot of standing lately.  I'm on family leave taking care of my daughter (5 months old) for a few months.  The first few weeks my calves and lower back were sore from all the standing and carrying her around.  Now they feel good.  I also got some home-gym stuff (resistance bands, dumbells, pull-up bar) to simulate lifting weights a few times a week while I'm home.  I'll never be "jacked" but I don't want to be a frail old man later in life.  I should probably add some cardio into the routine.

Hello everyone,
I'm Dan.  I'm am recently on a paleo-ish diet.  It's part of a larger fitness and self-improvement campaign that I'm on since entering my 40's.  Eating an ancestral diet just makes sense to me, and I'm interested in learning more about a well rounded paleo/ancestral lifestyle.  I've read a lot of the stuff you guys probably have - that our pre-civilized ancestors were actually healthier and longer lived than our more recent settled grain-eating ancestors were.  So I eat (virtually) no junk, no flour, no sugar, coffee and alcohol only rarely, etc.  Lots of vegetables, fats, and protein.  I'm not totally on the paleo wagon, as I feel that being of western european descent I am evolved to digest dairy, and I'm reluctant to give up my beans and steel cut oats.  But I'm open minded, so we'll see - I managed to dump white potatoes, which used to comprise a significant part of my diet! 
Unlike most people, I also started the diet to gain weight.  I was the 90lb weakling in High School who could eat cafeteria food and candy bars all day and never gain a pound.  Years of blue collar work toughened me up a bit, but it always took a lot of effort to keep fit, and I'd turn to mush quickly without constant effort (I was what people call "skinny fat" at one point).  I decided it had a lot to do with my diet, which was awful.  I did some research on exercise as well, and sure enough making some changes I gained a few pounds of muscle over the past few months.
I'm also very interested in restoring digestive health, in terms of intestinal linings and gut microbiome.  I've had some success with this after reading up on it.  I feared it was a lost cause after decades of sugar, coffee, alcohol, processed food, and having had anti-biotics, but in a few short months I notice a big difference.
I'm glad I found a place to compare notes, most of the info out there is on websites that are trying to sell you stuff.  I don't need a cookbook that tells me how to make broccoli muffins.  I'll just lightly steam some broccoli and eat it. I'm at the point I don't crave muffins and whatnot anymore and can eat real food as real food.
