Congratulations!  My little boy is also called Duncan.  ;D

Eat more animal fat.

I totally agree.  When I make chicken, I add fat.  I sometimes dip it in bacon grease.  :)

Eat some pork or some other animal with lots more fat.

I feel for you.  My sister is/was a prescription drug addict (she lives 1200 miles away, so I'm not sure if I can believe her that she's stopped).  It would be nice to not care....but it's not realistic.

I'm sorry for what you're going through.  I think an al-anon meeting or at least a book on addiction could really help you. An addict can't be helped unless they want to be helped...remember that.

A nice, hot bath or shower helps me sometimes.  I do sometimes have a drink or two now, but I didn't while actively losing weight.

If it must be food related, some good bacon always helps!

I've got my 6 year old son almost primal (he does eat dairy), and I've noticed a big difference.  He's certainly not a perfect angel, but he's manageable.  ;D

He has also thinned out and grown a couple inches seemingly overnight.    :)

Diet and nutrition / Re: Short on cash: Rice?

Carrots and yams (not entirely paleo) can help with adding bulk to meals.  They are not as cheap as rice, but better for you.

Do you hunt? Do you know anyone with land?  You may be able to get some meat the old fashioned way.  What about eggs?  They are really cheap if you aren't concerned about organic and free range.

Make things last.  Save every bone and make a broth or stew. Put all leftovers in a bag in the freezer for your stews.

Good luck!

I've mentioned this once before, but it bears repeating:

Be careful with RDA numbers.  Some are very low, the smallest number of item X needed to avoid Y serious affliction and make a man fit for army service.

Translation:  there is often a HUGE gap between bare minimum and optimal

I totally agree, especially with vitamin D.  But, I'm more careful with vitamin A.

I'd be careful with cod liver oil, as it is very high in vitamin A (which is easy to get from food).

To keep a roast moist while it"t cooking, drape some bacon over the top.  ;D

Okay, let me preface this by saying that I hate getting my picture taken...especially before I lost weight.  So, the only pic I could find for a before picture is from Halloween in 2007 that shows more than my face. I probably weighed 180 then. A year ago I weighed 185.  At Christmas when the after picture was taken, I was a little under 140.

Ok, before:

Oh yeah, I'm past the point of turning back.  I can post some pictures a bit later.  I've lost about 50 pounds and have never been healthier.  I've also got the immediate family mostly converted too.  :D

Thanks everyone!

I take 6000 IU per day.  I test every six months and am almost to the point of not being deficient.  I live in the northern US, and have a condition where I get hives if I spend more than 10 minutes in the sun from March until I need it.  Having said that, most people in northern latitudes are deficient.
