I started taking fish oil pills and got the worst heartburn I've ever had.  Switched over to Carlsons Fish Oil and it all went away.  I like smoked salmon as well.

Not quite sure if this is the right area to post in.  Came across this article and was rather dumbfounded.

Jan. 12, Cooksey attended a nutrition seminar at a church in Charlotte. The speaker was the director of diabetes services for a local hospital.

“She was giving all the wrong information, just like everyone always does — carbs are OK to eat, we must eat carbs to live, promoting low-fat, etc.,” Cooksey said. “So I spoke up.”

After the meeting he handed out a couple of business cards pointing people to his website.

Three days later, he got a call from the director of the nutrition board.

“Basically, she told me I could not give out nutritional advice without a license,” Cooksey said.

I'm speechless.

The breakfast is a little questionable.  Personally it would keep me from losing weight, the high carbs and sugar. 

I can't remember the last time I ate a dozen chocolate bars or a bucket of KFC. Yay me!

Wow.  If you have done that in the past and you have come thru that then I truly commend you.  Well done.....Yay you indeed!  Keep up the GREAT work.

My worry was the grain portion of the diet.

My wife went in the hospital last Wednesday in pain as an infected polyp in her colon ruptured.  Shes still there but doing better thanks to copious amounts of pain medication and three intravenous antibiotics.  She hasn't eaten yet which is no fun.  The dr and surgeon said she could go home probably in 1-2 days and they may prescribe soft food tomorrow. 
 She has a history of yeast infections, kidney stones and migraines.  She isn't Paleo like me although she eats the meals I cook for the family and eats the food I provide in the fridge.  But she likes to add her stuff and eats different while she's at work.  Better said she's a part timer, but has her vices that she likes; bread and creamers for her tea and coffee.

I'm in the middle of "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and I've read enough to be convinced that American nutrition, medical basis, and health theories should be an X-File.  The diet prescribed for recovering Diverticulitis patients is the "western diet" that brings all the "diseases of civilization".

It's gonna be hard to help her with a recommended diet that is the cause of the disease in the first place.  Any tips on how to convince her to eat the Banting Way in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary?

While there appeared to be some fat on the deer, most of it stays on the outside of the meat.  When you process the meat into its perspective "cuts" then you find out how little fat the meat has in or on it.  There is basically no marbling  and no fat strips lining roasts or steaks.  Of all the deer meat I have processed and cooked and eaten, there has never been enough to fat to cook with.  You always need to use other sources of "lube"  (?).   
    That said,  someone who processes the deer or other game animal similar to the ways the "lithic" societies would have, may have used the fat from the outside of the meat (that comes from right beneath the skin)  to eat.  When I processed mine, I've always gone after meat, not entirety.

All this talk about coffee not being Paleo is bogus I think.  Think about it, soaking a seed in water and then drinking the water?  That's totally caveman. 

Coffee houses are what keeps this world from blowing each other up.  A good coffee house is a literal "pause" button on the stress of life.  When's the last time you heard of a coffee house shoot out? 

I have it on good authority that some primal cultures had coffee rocks.  It was just a big rock along side of a river that men and women would gather and drink the "black water" (that's what my source says they called it @ to cave paintings).  It is believed that after a few generations of the development of the coffee-rock, and the talking and discussion that went on, men stopped dragging their women by their hair.  Now that's progress!

Here's how I've gone about it.

This is what it looks like in the bag.  It has no smell.  It's hard and waxy.  Very easy to deal with.

Here it's been in the pot about an hour and a half.

This is what I used to strain/filter the liquid into the jar.  Just a one cup coffee filter thingy.

Here's what it looks like after being cooked down, and filtered into a jar.  It's still hot.

The pot and the stuff.  This is about three hours into it after I have strained about a quart from it.  I'm hoping all this will cook down.

It didn't all cook down.  I mashed it throughout the process with a potato masher and the "pulp" wound up being like a heavy grit.  I saved it until I found out if that is the infamous "cracklin" that everyone raves about.  Is it edible?  Is it good for you?  Is it tasty?

Here's the tallow the next day after being in the fridge all night.  I know it's blurry but I was trying to get a sheen off of the tallow itself.  It's like white wax.  Same consistency.  Mine does still have a smell to it.  I hear it shouldn't.  Is it still alright?

Coffee can be objective.  Espresso is not-so-much.  It's very hard to find good to really good espresso.  It's very easy to go and have really BAD espresso.  If you can find a cafe that has workers who actually drink espresso themselves you'll have a much better chance of getting a good shot of espresso.  But I run into lots of people who say they've tried espresso and hated it, but when I ask them where they had it, it's usually one of the places that serves awful espresso.  A really good espresso tastes completely different from a bad one.  It's a completely different sensation.  So if you can find a good one, try that.  But don't get turned off by bad ones till you try good stuff.  Then, and only then, will you pass into Jedi-Paleo-Man status.
