BP Going Back Up
« on: June 22, 2011, 06:20:18 PM »
About 3/4 weeks into this diet, my bp dropped dramatically from 145/95 into the 115/75 range.  I was getting dizzy so I stopped taking all bp meds.  It's been about 3 weeks since then and I see my bp going back up.  It was at 143/109 tonight.  I've been forcing myself to drink tons of water recently also.  Could this be the cause of the bp spike?  I really hate to start taking the meds again after feeling so good without them for the past month but if it keeps going up what do I do?  I'm not overweight, 5'10" between 185/190 and very physically active.  Just had blood work done recently, sugar is at 105, total cholesterol at 150. Kayaker, fisherman, hiker, bicycle rider and anything else you can do outside, I'm a regular.  I was searching the results of massive intake of water and many people say it has also caused their bp to go up.  Has anyone else here experienced this?  Will my bp go back down when it's used to the extra water intake?  Over the weekend I got a bad sunburn on my legs which caused them to swell up also, not sure if this is related or not.  Haven't changed my eating habits recently, still stick to paleo religiously.  From what I understand, diuretics, as a bp med, remove excess water from the blood/system causing the bp to go down.  Seems to me then, if you mechanically remove the water from the blood by not drinking as much, the bp should also go down.  It's all very confusing.  Can anyone shed some light on this by way of experience?

drinking tons of plain water is wrong and can kill you.

Try to eat a raw / rare paleo diet.  Fish ceviche, coconut meat, coconut juice... raw wild honey and lemon juice, not plain water... not plain water.

Do some kidney cleansing.

like Avocado leaves tea and a touch of raw wild honey http://www.curemanual.com/detox-protocols-and-treatments/kidney-cleansing/how-to-make-avocado-leaves-tea-for-kidney-cleansing/

or eat a ton of fresh ripe water melon while in a warm bath tub the entire day.

I'm on Raw Paleo diet but I have kids to feed on cooked paleo diet.

Water or Gatorade? I'm pretty certain you were asking about the sports drink in another thread today.

I'm guessing the rise in your BP has more to do with the salt and sugar in Gatorade than in drinking more water....

Has your carb intake changed? My understanding is BP is strongly influenced by insulin. The insulin stops you excreting sodium, which makes you hang on to water. If your carb intake has gone up that might account for it.

Kyleen 66 - I did post a paragraph about gatorade a few days ago.  I had none today though, only straight water.  Today I noticed my bp going up.  Could have gone up yesterday too, due to the gatorade but I didn't actually measure it until tonight.   I was drinking a half gallon per day, along with a half gallon of water, mixed together as it was too sweet for me drinking it straight.  I'm hoping that's what it was so I'll give it a few days for my system to get rid of the extra sodium and continue to flush it with plain water.  I'll monitor my bp for several more days and see if it goes down.  I'll keep you posted.  Thank you guys for the comments.

Jean - my carb intake hasn't changed at all.  I stick to paleo religiously, except for the Gatorade in question of course, and maybe the extra carbs came from that.  The only carbs I generally eat throughout the day are bananas, pears, an orange or an apple or two.  Maybe get some misc carbs from some veggies.  Meat, nuts, and hard boiled eggs, sometimes cook bacon and eggs.  Other than that kind of thing, I eat no carbs at all.

As I said then, BP can go up for lots of reasons.

Even getting stressed about BP tests can cause your BP to go up.

It will also take a little while for all the effects of te Gatorade to leave your system.

Are you drinking water because you're thirsty, or are you pounding it because you think you should?

Try drinking only when thirsty for a week (don't wait until you're dying of thirst; if you pay attention you'll be able to tell when it's time to drink).  My limited experience is that it can take some time for blood pressure to drop - I've never had high BP, but if I cut out caffeine or salt, it takes a couple weeks before mine drops from normal to low normal.

Also, when are you taking your BP?  If it's after exercise, even light exercise, you might be getting results that are "artificially" elevated compared to your resting BP.  Have you tried waiting and resting an hour after a high reading, then taking it again to see if there is a difference?  Whenever I've taken mine in school as part of labs, I always look pre-hypertensive because, without fail, I've just come out of a midterm exam after having lots of caffeine.
