Disappointed with weigh in/body fat%
« on: August 18, 2011, 08:44:21 PM »
Hi there. I have been Paleo for about a month and a half now. Prior to that, I was eating clean for a year with whole wheat, whole grains, oatmeal, etc. I felt good but I didn't lose weight. Then I found Paleo. I eat 3x a day. Each meal is protein, veggies, lots of water, 1-2 fruits a day and I cook everything myself! I don't go to restaurants or eat fast food EVER. I have been dedicated to the gym and working out with weights and cardio 4-5 days a week since Jan 2011. My bf had our body fat retested (first time since Jan that we checked it) and I went from an embarrasing 44%-40% and I lost 10 lbs. My bf lost 12%body fat and 26lbs. We both look better and are in smaller clothes. But I'm working so hard it makes me mental that my #'s weren't higher. I thought for sure if I was losing fat but gaining muscle, my body fat % would be much lower. I do 2 spin classes a week, run the other 2-3 days I'm in the gym, and work out with weights each day on a split (certain muscle groups certain days).
I know I haven't been Paleo a long time, but since I have been doing it, I feel better, lighter, not bloated, sleep great and dream vivdly and often. I have also seen a dramatic drop in my blood pressure- so much so that my Dr lowered my bp meds and is working on weaning me off them completely. That is huge for me. I've been on them forever. What can I change in my workout to be more effective for weight/bfat loss?

Men lose weight more easily than women - it's just a fact of life, I'm afraid.  10 pounds in 1.5 months is pretty good progress - keep it up!

Ten pounds in six week is about a pound and half a week. Which is EXCELLENT.

I've heard, and it probably depends on age and how much you have to lose, that if you lose more than 3 pounds a week, you can end up with loose skin. There are other associated health risks.

Also, make the tape measure your friend. If you lose inches, even if the scale doesn't move, you're gaining muscle and losing fat. I track both weight and inches myself.

I also have to wonder if you are working out TOO much. Lately I've been doing a lot more research and if you work out too much, you can stall weight loss. I think Robb Wolf has some good advice on this. Another thing he talks about is sleep. If you're not getting enough, which for most people is 8 or more hours, it can also stall weight loss.

And finally, Warren is right. Men drop pounds and fat faster. A lot of it has to do with hormones and I think female bodies like to be at the ready to be pregnant at any time. It's not a matter of "fair" - it's just nature. We don't get mad at the fox for eating the rabbit because he's faster with sharper teeth. The differences between men and women are pretty much the same thing. I'm sure it's a bit discouraging, but as long as the two of your celebrate your accomplishments, it's all good.

My suggestions would be:

1. Use a tape measure to track your progress rather than a scale

2. Lower your fruit consumption

3. Dump the body part split workouts (designed for roiders) and start doing squats, hip thrusts and tabata (high impact interval training)
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Sounds to me like good progress for a month and a half! And if you're feeling so much better, it will be easy to keep up. You will get there.

I think you're doing really well - as others have pointed out, women lose weight a fair amount more slowly than men and tapes are better to monitor progress than the scale

That said, I would suggest

a) fat, you don't mention how much you're eating with your protein and veggies.  Eat fat!
b) drop to one fruit a day and try and make it berries
c) some days, eat only 2x a day.  Easier if you're eating quite a bit of fat

 :)
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!
