Health Screening/Blood Work Results
« on: October 21, 2010, 06:17:33 AM »
Just got back from a health screening.  My husband's work gives us financial incentives if you get screened and meet their (lenient) goals for various health markers.

27 y/o female with a family history of high LDL and low HDL:

Height: 5'6
BMI: 19.9
Total Cholesterol: 172
LDL: 70
HDL: 93
Fasting Blood Glucose: 87
Blood Pressure: 116/80

I'd had strong black coffee about 45 minutes before the test, which is why the BP is a touch high.  Usually it's low-normal.

The pharmacist said my HDL was the highest she'd ever seen.  ;D

These are great results.  I know the cholesterol theory is an unproved hypothesis but we often have to live in those parameters for life and health insurance reasons.

Some companies are refusing to hire smokers. Someday they may refuse to hire people with cholesterol higher what main stream medicine considers normal.  I know sounds crazy. But if I told you 20 years ago companies would refuse to hire smokers, or wouldn't allow smoking anywhere on their premises - outdoors 100 feet away from the building, some people would of said I was crazy.

But how is that not discrimination?  Especially now where more and more of the health insurance bill gets passed on to the employee anyway.  Just a thought.

I doubt they'll quit hiring people with high cholesterol, since they'd cut their applicant pool pretty severely.  I know what you mean, though.  How does a company know if you smoke, other than if you tell them?

My husband's job offers "rewards" if you have or can get your BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. within certain limits.  You get an additional reward just for taking the health screening, and no penalties.  I think we earned a total of almost $900 between the two of us.  It's been a pretty good incentive for a lot of his coworkers.

In the U.S., I don't think you can just refuse to hire someone because he smokes.

However, you can make it clear that the workplace is a nonsmoking workplace, and that smoking breaks will not be provided.

Just a quick Google and I found such policies in place in the U.S., although they are likely to be challenged in court.

I found only hospitals, but I understand it is not uncommon in industry as well.

Actually hospitals might be able to justify it.  The general rule is that you can't use things that are unrelated to job performance.  Being a smoker is unrelated to performance on most jobs, but hospitals might be able to argue that it's job related.

Monitoring your health and having periodical tests like this are very important for maintaining your health these days as nothing you do is enough these days to take care of you seeing the new illness we see and hear about!! It is a great idea that companies encourage their employees and their families to take tests like this and give them additional incentives which will motivate them to have these tests and take care of their health!!

This year's results.  I'm pleased.

Total Cholesterol: 173 mg/dL
Triglycerides: <45 mg/dL (too low to register on the machine)
HDL: 93 mg/dL
LDL: estimated at 71 using 45 mg/dL as the triglyceride number.  Really it's less than this.

Fasting Blood Glucose: 89 mg/dL
Blood Pressure: 118/73 mmHg
Pulse: 70 bpm

The pharmacist laughed when he gave me the papers on how to improve those numbers, and said to just keep doing whatever I'm doing.

Thanks!  While I'm not of the opinion that cholesterol is the be all and end all of health screening, it is nice to have some decent numbers.
