Me starting a new phase of life
« on: April 13, 2011, 03:30:54 PM »
Hey you guys,

My name is Stafen, I'm male, 20 years old and I come from Germany!

(Please understand if there are some grammar mistakes, since English isn't my mother tonge. Though I really try hard to make as few mistakes as possible.)

I study biology at a German university.

The last few years of my life were kind of hard. I had several psychological issues. Besides from that I also felt very unfit and tired.

Actually I'm a quite slim and athletic-looking person(without doing that many sports).

But my problem is, that I'm really addicted to sugar! I'm very lucky that I didn't get fat the last years! I ate tons of chocolate and groceries! It's really gross...

But now I want to change! It's just unhealthy. And I want to live healthy. I'm sure that will help me very much during my studies at university! And I'm really into that paleo stuffs. I think it's so exciting! :)

I want to make even more sports(I did Yoga and jogging the last few months).

But I won't do any certain muscle training, because I think that it's not really "natural". I will start a fitness plan. I want to do jogging, swimming, Karate and some Tai-Chi.

And tomorrow I will start to eat really paleo!!! I did it for a week last month! It was hard to leave all that sugar away. But I did it. And I know, that I will do it now too.

I'm writing this report to motivate myself! And maybe, some of you guy are interested in other peoples' stories too?

No fears - the next reports won't be that long! I don't want to bore you...

I will upload a "before"(actually "now") photo in the next few days.

Feel free to comment.

Greetings from Germany!

Hi Stafen!

Good luck! I was very sugar-addicted when I started paleo (I started only a few weeks ago). I constantly craved junk, like cookies and bread. Now, I don't crave it at all.  I don't even regard processed food as "food" anymore! Now I crave meats, fats, nuts, and occasionally dairy. Sugar is now too sweet.
For workouts I have been walking a lot, sprinting, and I hired a local professional fighter to kick my butt 3 times a week for 30 minutes. (lots of pushups, squats, and full-body workouts using only my body).

Yes, post some pics! I need to do that too. Good luck from the U.S :D

Hello tp!

Thank you!! :)

So you didn't make a final cut like "from now, no more sugars!" ?

I tried to leave sugar away so very, very often! But somehow it never really worked out. But once I said to me "okay, now absolutely no more sugars" and then I made it at least for one week!

I found out that jogging isn't really natural for humans, is that right? I notice, that I really need to read the books of Cordain and Arthur de Vany.

Squatting makes much sense to me!

Thank you so much! I will upload a photo the next days.

Keep on doing like that :)

Hi Stefan,

Yeah sugar is a tough addiction to crack, I would suggest eating a higher carb/lower fat version of paleo in the beginning  to help deal with the cravings.

I am over one year on paleo & still have odd sugar cravings but find even large amounts of fruit too sweet these days.
Stamp out weakness!!!

Howdy, Welcome!
While the your plan is good the lack of heavy lifting leaves it incomplete. There is nothing more natural than picking heavy stuff up and carrying it. The food had to get back to the tribe somehow? We have Elk here where I live. An elk quarter can weigh as much as 45kg. Generally that has be carried over difficult terrain for many miles.

Just something to think about.

Day 1:

Yes, I think I made it pretty well. Thank you Rollin for your suggestion, to eat some more carbs than normally with the paleo diet. I started the day cooking Quinoa, so I even tanked a bit of Omega 3 ;)
Despite from that I've only eaten meat, salad, beetroot, celery and one carrot. And I didn't eat one gramm of sugar! Yeeha :)
I feel good right now, it's 22:22 pm in Germany right now. I don't even need any sugar at the moment :)

@ Wlfdg;

Yes, it seems to make sense. What kind of stuff are you lifting? Woods?
I noticed that I really need to read some books about the paleo lifestyle, like the one's of Cordain and de Vany.
It's so interesting...

Hi Stafen,

Welcome!  I am also a biology major.

Quinoa is a food that is originally from the Americas, so is not Paleo.  The rest looks good.  The sugar cravings will go away, but the first few weeks can be difficult.

Hey,

that's cool! Are you Bachelor or Master?

I know. I only cooked it for the reason to get some more carbs. I hope to minimize the sugar cravings with it.

Yes, it's really difficult. I've made it for a week yet, but after that, I already skipped back into addiction again...

How long are you eating Paleo?

Right now I'm training with heavy sandbags, kettlebells, dumbbells and bodyweight(+xtra weight). When the snow melts out I'll add big stones and logs to that.
My training varies throughout the year. Last summer I was training in a gym with barbells and dumbbells. Autumn and winter its the sandbags, etc... as above.

Hey,

that's cool! Are you Bachelor or Master?

Right now, I'm going for an Associate Degree (2 year degree).  I already have a Bachelor's in anthropology, so I do not need another for what I want to do.  I may decide to go for an extra year and get my B.S. for biology, depending on time and finances.

I found out that jogging isn't really natural for humans, is that right?

Actually, humans are the best runners in the world. There is no creature out there that can out run us. Before we developed bows and arrows, we used persistence hunting. Where we would run animals until they died of exhaustion. It was a guarunteed kill, because we can outrun everything. It just took time (hence the eventual migration to more efficient forms of hunting). There are still some remote places where persistence hunting is practiced. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wI-9RJi0Qo

So keep up the jogging. I would recommend, if you are feeling freakish (like me), to try barefoot running. But before you do it, I'd recommend reading up on it. I'd recommend this forum for info http://www.runnersworld.com/community/forums/runner-communities/barefoot-running

This is a theory that doesn't hold much weight. If it were true we would not have developed more efficient forms of weapons. As well I stand firm that my bodytype would have never developed.

Running is the very last form of exercise you want to do. It's catabolic in nature which is another reason I think the persistent hunter theorists are stumbling delusionally over their worn out feet.  If they would stop, let their cortisol levels come down, eat some protein and put on some lean muscle mass they would see this.

Yes, jogging is not a productive form of exercise.

Before we developed bows and arrows, we used persistence hunting.

actually it's more likely that we were scavengers.

Some humans evolved to be better at persistence running, some evolved to be better at sprinting (c.f. Ethiopian marathon runners vs west african sprinters)
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

Pure drivel. Deer and elk can outrun humans both short and long distance.
