More weight loss!
«

Hi all, I just got back from the Dr, and I've lost another 4kg.
I wasn't specifically aiming to lose weight on paleo, my main reason for trying it was I wanted to stabilise my blood sugar, but the weight loss is a good side effect. I've now lost 19kg - was 90 now 71. The weight I feel healthiest at is 62 - 65kg, so a little more off would be nice. My weight loss is slowing down so I'm hoping it'll even out in the "ideal" range. Woo hoo!

Nice!
Women sometimes have trouble with weight loss on this diet, so if you could take the trouble to post a food journal for a week or so, that might be very helpful.
Also, may I ask some questions? These relate to some reasons that might or might not be related to other women's difficulty with weight loss on paleo. Specifically:
- Have you had your gall bladder out?
- Are you taking thyroid medication?
- Are you diabetic / taking insulin?
Please ignore me if the questions are too personal.

Hi Warren, no, not too personal.
Yes, my gall bladder has been out for more than 10 years. I thought that would slow down my progress as I have to be careful not to overdo the fat in any one meal, but I've found that by eating a little starch with fattier meals I've been fine and I'm still making good progress.
No, no thyroid medication and not diabetic, although type 2 does run in the family. In fact that was what got me looking for a new way of eating - I was getting a lot of blood sugar crashes which were unpleasant in themselves and also got me worried I was on the fast track to diabetes. I started looking at low GI diets, but I'm also keen on natural foods, and then I stumbled across Paleo which seemed to tick all the boxes.
I hadn't thought of posting a journal - I'm not very strict so I thought I might not be setting a very good example, lol, but if you'd like me to I will.
I'm very grateful for all the info and support I've had from the folks here.
Thanks avelin!

Another win this morning - I've been finding my "medium" jeans too loose (the ones I couldn't get into a few months ago) so I tried on my old "skinny" jeans this morning, and they fit! That's a drop from size 18 to size 12 jeans in three months. (That's size 16 to 10 US.) All with no hunger and no hassle! I am close to my ideal weight now - just a handful of blubber still to shift off the lower abdomen.
I'm finding I have more energy and getting about is a lot easier. My knees and feet don't hurt.
I'm also finding my tolerance for fat is gradually rising, so I'm experimenting with gradually cutting back on starch.
DH has a job interview next week and we had to go buy him a new suit, his old clothes didn't fit any more. He's lost 15cm around his waist, even though he's still eating some non-paleo snacks. He's getting his repeat blood test done on Tuesday. I'm very hopeful we'll see some progress there - last time the Dr was threatening him with statins. With some movement in the right direction I think he'll be encouraged enough to commit to paleo full-time.

Thank you! I'll post an update when DH has been in for his results. I'm especially hoping for improvement on weight (almost guaranteed given the drop in his waist measurement), blood pressure, HDL and triglycerides.
I'm looking forward to the next 20 years being better than the last 20 years - not something many middle-aged couples expect!

DH's latest stats:
HDL: 1.15 mmol/L (up from 0.89)
triglycerides: 0.8 mmol/L (down from 3.0)
weight: only about 10 kg overweight now (not sure how much he used to weigh but I'm guessing a drop of about 10 kg)
BP: no change at 138/80
His LDL had also gone up, which his Dr was concerned about, but my undertanding is that the bad part of LDL is related to the triglycerides, so I'm not so worried about that at this stage - the improvement in triglycerides is awesome!
DH is feeling encouraged and is ready to commit to paleo - yay! His next check will be November - hopefully he'll have some more progress then. He was disappointed not to see an improvement in BP though. He plans to get more exercise and do some yoga, hopefully that will help.

Good news then! I really am trying to get my head around it all. It seems his good cholesterol has gone up though
Does the doc know he's doing the diet?

No, he couldn't be bothered with an argument about it. He just told her that he's cut out biscuits and is "eating healthier". If he's still progressing well next time he might tell her then.

Another progress report. I'm now 2/3s the woman I used to be. I was 90kg in Feb, just got back from a Dr appointment this morning, and I'm now 60kg! Wow! All without any hunger, I eat delicious food, I have heaps of energy, and I never have to weigh, measure or count anything! I'd love to go wave a banner outside a Weight Watchers meeting right now, lol.
In the past when I've been less than 62kg I've felt underweight, weak and tired. But I guess I was underweight because I was sick, not vice versa. Right now I feel fantastic. So maybe my real ideal weight is a bit lower than I thought before?
I still have a little mound on my lower abdomen, but I'm starting to think a lot of that is just baby slack rather than fat. It's not noticeable unless I'm naked, not about to start in on cosmetic surgery, so I guess I'll have to give up on the idea of wearing a micro-bikini to the beach ever again, but hey who really wants to see a middle-aged woman in a micro-bikini anyway?
One of the things I am most pleased about is that my skin seems to have bounced back completely. (Other than the lower belly thing.) That surprises me as I'm 45, but I guess all that healthy protein, fat and general good nutrition has helped. I think other than the fact that I refuse to dye my hair, I look a good 5 years younger than I did a year ago.
I think I might get myself a new hairstyle for summer to celebrate.
Also picked up DH's latest blood lipid test results, and they are also improved! HDL up, LDL down, ratio in the "healthy" range for the first time ever. And his total cholesterol has come down, it now just squeaks in to the 200-240 "sweet spot" for all-cause mortality. Triglycerides low too, so he's very pleased.
My Dr was very impressed. I told her we'd cut out junk food, wheat and sugar and were eating more meat and vegetables. (Well, I reckon 80% of it comes down to that.)

That's really great Jean!
Tell the doctor about the paleo lifestyle -they should learn what the effects of eating this way can do.

Hi Naomi, and welcome to the forum. Paleo is pretty simple really, just eat meat, fish and/or eggs for every meal with as much non-starchy veg as you feel like. You can also eat starchy veg, fruit and nuts, but if you find you're not losing weight you may need to control the quantities of those things. (I didn't need to.) No grains, sugar or processed food at all. Strict paleo doesn't include dairy or legumes, but I have eaten butter and occasional small quantities of high-fat dairy, and fresh legumes like green beans and snow peas as an occasional vegetable. If you are hungry, eat more paleo fats to keep you satisfied without messing up your blood sugar.
If you put up a thread in the intro section you'll get lots of helpful replies.
